Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

No Pay for substituting Classes...Wish I Knew That Before Subbing for a Class....

I was just informed that I would not be paid for subbing for a class...WTF??? Oh, it'll be part of your release time/admin time or whatever they are calling it these days...

So when did that policy take effect? Was anyone going to tell us or just keep treating us like mushrooms?

Wish I knew that before agreeing to subbing the class...I could have been doing something more constructive to paying bills...like updating my resume...

Isn't compensation for your time ALSO professional courtesy?

Hourly rate for FT? In my dept FT are salary. There is no hourly rate. I have a feeling here that onground is different than online. And it depends on the length of time, your position etc. Just Google the question. For example here is one instance for FT covering for FT

"Discuss the anticipated length of absence with the Dean. Attempt to locate a full-time faculty to cover your class(s). Full-time faculty is expected to assist in covering other full-time faculty’s classes on occasion. Such practice is considered a professional courtesy."

This is not a NEW money saving policy, its been going on for at least a decade. It just depends on what location and what boss you have trying to make it sound like corporate policy. Like I said, if its truly a policy, it should be written down somewhere in no vague terminology.

That is 100% false and a violation of labor laws. I smell another lawsuit.

In the 11 years I have been a FT faculty member I have ALWAYS been paid my hourly teaching rate for subbing. It has never been part of my normal duties. As a former manager I also ALWAYS was authorized to pay all faculty, FT or adjunct their hourly teaching rate for subbing, without question. This could be a new money saving policy.

If acting as a sub is part of FT responsibility, then they should be more then willing to put that in print somewhere. Otherwise its a scam.

Subbing infers covering for a day or so and that is part of ft responsibility. If you were asked to teach more than a few days and the instructor went awol then a replacement would be found and paid. Quit whining and be glad you have a job.

You cant claim being fired for retaliation if you cant prove it on paper. Get them to put it in an email. Of course they know that trick. But one way around it, is to write it yourself as you understand per your conversation then email it to them. All they can do is try and claim they never saw it but you will have proof it was sent and revived. And it will look shady that they seem to not miss other important emails. Better yet, bring a trusted coworker with you and casually stop by your bosses office, then talk about the policy. If it ever goes to court, that witness will be invaluable. In fact you could even email your friend later about the discussion so you will have a paper trail even if EDMC says you never had the conversation. I learned the hard way, trust me on this one.

Depending on the state, there's probably a labor law violation, there. You have to get it all in writing (email is fine) before you can file a complaint. Oh, and if they fire you in retaliation for a legitimate complaint, you have an excellent wrongful termination action. But you must document, document, document!

See if you can get that non payment thing in writing. Send them an email asking for what the actually policy is. Dont fall for the "come talk to us in person" trick. That is their way of keep the paper trail clean. Make them respond in writing. If its a real policy written down somewhere they should not have a problem repeating it in an email.

That whole admin time/sub scam has been going on for years. I have been burned by it too. Turns out it's up to the discretion of your immediate supervisor if he can "find extra money". You know, like they are doing YOU a favor not you are doing THEM a favor. Normal school pay for subs period and usually hired outside the school. AI has a policy that said if you need a sub, it's up to you to find one and it should be another EDMC employee. That way they can pull the non payment trick. Admin time is the second part of the scam. That's supposed to be for real admin type work, grades, meetings, preparing class work etc. In theory, if you are busy doing all that, they should not be asking you to use that time to sub for someone else who is out sick. EDMC is not some school house on the prairie, its a billion dollar corporation. They could afford subs if they wanted to. But then they will give you a guilt trip or write you up on how you are not a team player.

are you fulltime? How long do you have to sub? A few days? A few weeks?

What campus are you on? I just recently subbed for someone and I think I am going to get paid. I signed all of the paperwork with my director and I didn't hear about not getting paid. I agree with you, there are much better things to do with your time then do others work. Is that legal?
