Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Low level school drone

Layoffs are scheduled for Tuesday, 9/30. This is according to managers giving staff a heads up. The size is unclear since a lot of people are quitting but we heard it was to be really big. The number they will let go must have dropped quite a bit over the last 6 weeks.

A few senior folks out of the corporate bumblers have left as well. Their salaries probably save 4 - 10 of us easy.

It has been rumored this round will impact our school badly (Argosy), the other schools, and even the corporate staff. Rumor also has it taking place over several days which has been a technique used in the past.

Since benefits have been cut there is no positive news for the future there is no reason to work here so folks are moving on. Given my role I might as well go back to being a truck driver.

Rumors are usually based on some kind of truth, no matter how distorted it gets as it goes around. Truth be told, you all know cuts and layoffs are coming. There is no way EDMC can survive without doing so. The question is just when, how many and how deep will the cuts be.

I see that my opinion was requested. Well here it is! I think that I have no idea what the f*** Im talking about. I don't have many friends and Im not very smart. I like to look up anime porn and when I'm not doing that I like to spread lies & rumors on for-profit school message boards. The reality is I was turned away by South University because I never got my GED. And that made me soooooooooooo mad. But you guys should listen to everything I say because I try really hard to seem credible. I even have a twitter account! That means I know my stuff! TO hell with edmc! Screw South University! I can paint better than anyone at art institute! Follow me on twitter!

WARN ACT didn't post the last lay offs. I think you're right. EDMC found loopholes.

Know your rights. http://www.dol.gov/elaws/elg/layoffs.htm They will probably just chip off a little at a time. Or chip off at different locations perhaps that is a loop hole. Regardless if it happens or not. It looks as though you are going to ride it out or abandon ship. Ultimately the choice is yours. Its always best to look for another job while you have a job though. Good luck everyone!!!!!!

We got them and the other bad sign, no one in Management will schedule a meeting for today. Hey here is a though, how about asking the people in charge directly? I would at least be fun to watch them lye and then turn around the very next day and backtrack on their word.

That must have went to a specific location as we did not receive it.

It's an email "reminding" everyone to wear their badge at all times. They usually heighten security right before and right after layoffs. Look for extra security on location tomorrow and that is a good sign...not that it will matter at that point.

I don't know if this is true but the timeline matches up with what they did in April. Monday they told the managers and Tuesday they had layoffs.

Well the infamous "badge email" went out last week. That is ALWAYS a sign that they are coming in one form or another. I've been with the company since 2009 and have seen it every single time.

I heard the Center is going to be broken down as it has been deemed ineffective at best

How wide a scope are we talking here? Just Argosy? Just on campuses? Anything in Pittsburgh, or The Center?

Has the earnings report been released?

They have left 450 go over the last year or so but I would think it needs to be in the 1000s if they want to save money. Bottom line is they are broke and need to do a total make over if they expect to last long. You can't lose millions every month and stay alive very long.

I agree when managers don't even know anything until the day of. Can you give a little more creditable source? Why start this rumor?

I'm just a little bit curious as to why you would wait until the day before we all go back to work. Are you trying to make people freak out or were you just giving us a chance to enjoy our weekend? I will bite if someone else actually confirms it. Seems odd that by your post that Argosy is going to take the brunt of this layoff. I suppose its good the number has gone down over the last six weeks but makes me wonder how high up in management you are since to my knowledge management doesn't have access to that much information. If you knew that long ago... Why not share then to help people prepare....
