Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

This is why admissions standards are needed and why Outreach does not work.

Out of 140 enrolled in 4 classes at the beginning of the semester, I have 60 left on the last day of classes. Out of those 60, approximately 20 look like they will pass with a minimum of a 60%. Of those 20, only 4 are in the A and B range. I don't have statistics like this at any other school. Before Outreach BS, I used to have slightly higher retention and pass rates.

To all non-online instructors:

Do you REALLY think instructors agree with having a video in the class showing the students how to do the assignment step by step? No. Do you really think instructors enjoy having to decipher the encrypted coding known as students’ discussion posts? No. Most instructors would like to have hard working students that are willing to work hard to get their degree. Most of the instructors that have worked for and are still working for EOU loathe the fact that the school is pretending to be an educational institution. It is a pretend school, with pretend students, and now they have instructors pretending to be instructors. The whole thing is a sham. If you do not have a degree from a REAL school, you will not understand this. Furthermore, there is a difference between a teacher and an instructor. A teacher teaches primary and secondary education. An instructor instructs students on a post-secondary educational level. If you have no experience as a post-secondary online instructor, please spare us your lay opinions of how instructors should feel and act and “instruct”. Thank you.

P.S. The online computers instructors also have to deal with a narcissistic micromanager with a title of a “Program Director”. Those of us who have attended and who are currently affiliated with real schools have never heard of this title, never had someone with a non-computer related degree run a Computer Science department, never heard of a school hire someone to be in a position to “manage” post-secondary online who has no post-secondary online instructor experience whatsoever, and have never experienced this level of harassment and micromanagement.

Funny...I have statistics showing there was over a 50% increase in at-risk students in my courses AFTER the outreach initiative started. I've shown this to multiple PD's and admins, but they all ignore it.

Of course they think outreach is a good idea. They force the instructors to do it without additional pay. They are not any additional money to try to make the student participate.

When I was in college (I have a MBA, BS) we actually had to go to class, participate and do the assignments on time. Even on the rare occasion I skipped class or didn't turn in an assignment, no one called me to tell me that I need to get back to class. But then again, I didn't go to Everest...I went to a state college.

So "outreach" gets inactive students to finally log in and type an incoherent sentence; they later go on to fail. They pay for that. Without the outreach, they would have to be withdrawn and given a refund.

At least it sounds like your students are trying. I'm lucky if mine write "nice post."

403 has obviously never taught a class, especially here at EOL. The students here are the worst that I ever seen. I teach at two other schools, one for profit and the other a community college. The quality of students that we get cannot even formulate a coherent post. Here are some examples cut and pasted:

“i will be using Googke Chrome because soon as u put in what your ooking for it pops right up no matter if it's speled correctly or not. Google doesn't send you many pop up blocks and it downloads quickly”

“Dear,Simon I am writing to inform you on the basic of a computer system.I know a little about a computer. There are four primary fiction providing an interfece to the users, manageing system resources, managing security and acess rights, running application.I about window, goolge these are some browser to download.I am so sorry I don't now more, but I hope to learn on the way....”

“Hello new student...In this letter I will explain the operating systems of a cumputer. First you must know how to access the enternet there many different types of websites...most common is Enternet explorer...but prefer Firefox...Anyway a operating system is the most emportend soft ware on your cumputer it manage's the cumputer memory processes and all of its hard ware and soft ware...without an operating system a cumputer is useless.”

I mean, what can you do with this?

Whew. That's a relief. I thought this community was losing its mojo. It's good to know everyone blames and hates each other again.

Lol @ PI. So if these "academics" just needed to "play a video", you must be grossly overpaid.

403 obviously doesn't know the types of students we have. Take your blinders off and read the statistics posted! Out of hundreds that supposedly are in it for the degree, only a handful pass in classes where ALL they have to do is play a video and follow along to complete their homework. If you can't do that, then yes you should be called an idiot that is enrolled for other reasons than learning.

@403: Get off youf high horse. We all know that CCi is not a real school. Instructors are treated like crap by upper management and are forced to try to teach students that are not prepared for college. The instructors try to help them yet the students could give a rat's ass. Then the instructor is blamed. No wonder they feel jaded and have enough of trying to do their jobs!

Every once in a while I completely lay off the outreach, and production increases! I really think there is a case to be made that outreach is counterproductive.

Wow, with "instructors" like these, no wonder they suck. Flat out calling your students idiots is pretty telling. Maybe you should consider that they're really not that bright, but still trying to get a degree.

So if you say the students are in it just for the stipend, what are you in it for? The salary? The name-calling?

Get off your high horse !

I waste so much time with Outreach, skype, and Talisma, with absolutely NO RESULTS!!!! In fact, since this stupidity was implemented, more and more of these so-called students are failing and being dropped. These Everest Online Management Morons get so excited over a report of one student posting an incoherent sentence in a class discussion to trigger attendance after being absent for a month, and wow an outreach success story. In reality, the student ends up never posting again and fails. All that time and effort wasted with Oureach crap and the instructor gets blamed for it.

In my intro Computer Applications courses, they have dumbed it down so much over the years that they even have videos that show the student how to complete each graded homework. I am talking each and every step! Yet the idiot students still don't do the work or do it wrong. It is unbelievable how easy they have made it and yet very few take advantage of it. I will be passing less than 10 students out of 105 that started out.

My numbers are similar. This also goes to show what kinds of 'students' we have...they are in it for the stipend and not to put in any effort to learn.
