Thread regarding L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. layoffs

Engineering jobs at Hill AFB

There are many jobs open for engineers at Hill AFB as Civilians and contractors. Many former L-3 engineers have found new careers there. Joyce Peters recruited most of us for the USAF and has told us to spread the word back at L-3. We are content here and enjoying technical jobs. Feels good to be working without the layoff axe overhead. So send your resume to joyce.peters@us.af.mil.

Wow, you can't even use symbols on this site. That jumble of letters below is supposed to read "Air Force Civil Service is much better than CSW".

I'm a former CSW engineer working at Hill AFB. I've already been promoted to a GS-13; there are plenty of opportunities to move beyond the GS-12 level. The benefits are AMAZING and engineers enjoy iron-clad job security. Air Force Civil Service >>>>>>>>>>> CSW.

So it looks like to me a GS-12 step 10 is around 90k. Seems pretty low, so it must make it up in benefits. What are those like? 401k? Pension? Vacation? Medical, dental?

Working at Hill AFB as a Civil employee versus working at L-3.

Laid off from L-3 and the only other defense work local and equivalent to your skill set will be at the base or nearby. I’d compare the differences between L-3 and Hill AFB by comparing the commute using I-15 versus using Legacy Highway. I live in Salt Lake so the really bad commute is on the other side of the highway going the other direction. Driving on I-15 at 80 mpg is stressful because of the speed, big trucks, the congestion all enhanced by bad weather (rain/snow). Driving on Legacy is relaxing, lower speed, less congestion, no big trucks to kill you and even in bad weather somewhat pleasant compared to I-15.

At L-3 the biggest threat to your health is the stress. I’ve seen a few that I’m convinced died as result of it. Working at the base is relaxing and pleasant without the stress that we had at L-3. Working at L-3 produces a lot of adrenaline and sometimes exciting work, if you’re lucky. Working at the base, there is no adrenaline and the work is legacy maintenance stuff and somewhat boring. Working at L-3 you had a great salary, working at the base you are capped into your GS grade level (GS-12 grade 10, much less than L-3) and you won’t get an increase for years. Working at the base you have virtually no chance of getting laid off and can stay for life. You can relax, sit back, actually have conversations with your co-workers without being afraid of being over heard or asked for a charge code. If you’re looking for adrenaline stay in the private sector and work for another defense contractor. If you’re looking to ride it out to the end come up to the base.
