Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Information needed please.

If you are from upper management and you have some good in your heart, please, tell us something. No one will ever know who you are!

I fear that it will get harder to provide for my family. Thank you.

EDMC talks out of both sides of their mouth. When THEY want to do something greed related like cut jobs, increase work load, cut 401K benefits, it's just business, and you would do the same they say. But when employees want to leave midterm it's all about you abandoning the children, your lack of ethics and non commitment to education. WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN !!!!!!! LOL

They are not kids, they are adults, in fact some have been in in overseas wars and back. I think they can handle a teacher here and there leaving for a better opportunity in the work force just like the real world, especially if you explain what is going on. Of coarse EDMC wants you to just disappear and not say a word but that's part of their normal way of diminishing the important of people once they leave.

I am just going to say it, screw the kids and get another job as fast as you can. There are plenty of people who can fill in for you and that line is just a corporate guilt trip to control employees. I have had substitute instructors in college before, its no big deal, the sky will not fall. You are only one of 5 classes the student is spending his/her time on anyway.

Here is one tip I I wish I knew when I was laid off years ago from another company. Get outside long term unemployment insurance. It seems expensive bu since you technically have not been told there is a layoff coming you should qualify. I think it takes a while to kick in, but if you can get it will be a big help on top of unemployment insurance from the government. Also, never expect management to help you in any way shape or form. You can see from the post here people make excuses for them like "what can they do, or would you do the same" which the answer is no. Not all companies operate that way. Some companies top management keep their employees in the loop even if they know some might quite before hand. Some even return their salaries to keep the company afloat instead of laying people off. Shocking I know right?

The site is not moderated and constantly spammed. Add to that that really, no one has any information other than a link from time to time clarifying a business deal. It's a waste of time to come here. Sorry. I'm in the same position as you - and here is all you can do: Work on your plan B.

  • If you own a home with equity get a low interest equity loan for emergency back up.

  • Look into the unemployment benefits in your state, as well as energy and rent help from your city if unemployed or low income.

  • Find an insurance broker who can set you up with Obamacare benefits.

  • Get on an email jobs listing service.

  • Look into alternative employment.

  • Find alternative income streams - rent a room out to a student?

You never know - you may be employed here for years, or you could get a call tomorrow. But with the company struggling, you'd be foolish not to have some sort of back up plan.

Think about it - what can upper management tell you? They probably don't know much them selves except the wheels are in motion and they are dealing with SEC and lawsuits and at the same time studying restructuring.

You're basically asking for some ray of hope. Even if they told you your job was safe, would you believe them? I mean, really, set aside the idea that EDMC will provide a safety net or security. Just prepare as best you can for the worst and be happy each day you get a paycheck. Prep the resume. Do good work doing what you do in the meantime. And don't listen to the negativity here. Your experience here can be spun when looking for work. EDMC provides training, work experience, etc. I bet you have a bunch of skill sets you can market.

Depending on your safety net, you may have to move if laid off. Research cheap places to live, moving costs, quality of life in different locales that are less expensive to live in. Good luck! :-)
