Thread regarding L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. layoffs

Lots of people walking around CSW today with VSO paperwork. Anybody have numbers of how many took the VSO?

I heard 33 took the VSO and 75-100 more will be laid off this Thursday (8/28) from Engineering at CSW. I also heard they may take the opportunity to get rid of some more dead weight in Operations, although I don't know if that is certain and I don't have any specifics.

Stay calm and down run down your co-workers. No matter how bad it gets, in 20 years you'll think back and hopefully laugh. Saw this reference to L-3 in Sunday's Opinion page letter of the week to the editor.

Letter: Treat all cyclists as self-absorbed children

First Published Aug 22 2014 04:20 pm • Last Updated Aug 22 2014 04:20 pm

To the L3 Employee who blew out of the parking lot recently with no regard for the fact that my car would have to brake or swerve to avoid you. You should know that your life was saved because, years ago, I decided that it would be wise to treat all cyclists I see on the road as self-absorbed children with a heightened sense of entitlement and a diminished capacity to understand their own mortality.

My decision was not only shown to be prudent when I slowed to account for your lack of yielding to oncoming traffic, but also later when I decided to check if you were going to ignore my turn signal, indicating that I was about to turn on to the I-215 ramp.

I was not disappointed as I watched you blithely ignore my signal and the red light and blow right past me into the intersection. I can only hope that you will continue to encounter drivers such as myself who will, because of your example, view all cyclists as deranged morons with little understanding of the laws of physics and that you should continue to cheat death and the laws of Darwinian evolution.

The so-called "stigma of being laid off from L-3" isn't half as bad as the "stigma of being employed by L-3". The best thing that can happen to these people is to remove the blood-sucking parasite that is L-3, whether voluntary or involuntary. They will find new jobs at companies without the corruption of a management corp that makes "accounting irregularities" regular, ethical breaches an encouraged practice, and contemptible stupidity a promotable trait. The only thing not in their "best interest" is to stay amongst the ranks of those flaccid minds who further propel the company toward its all-too-certain managerial demise. September 4th should be a holiday for those so lucky.

I don't think anyone was told that taking the VSO was in their best interest. My understanding is that the managers who submitted names of layoff candidates also tried to find jobs for them elsewhere in the company. However, none were told that it would be in their best interest to take the VSO. Unfortunately, there were some people whose managers took them in their offices after the VSO application period had ended, so their only choice, then, was to either take the opportunity that was offered to them or get laid off.

Regarding VSO vs. layoff, I think people preferred to take the VSO so that they could avoid the stigma of having been laid off as they are looking for new jobs.

When they can encourage people to take the VSO, it makes the RIF-day easier and faster. Also, it makes the managers look better at "managing", rather than corporate and HR having to hold their hands and MAKE them fire people. In the past the VSO package has been on par with the RIF package as far as monetary compensation, let's just all be thankful that they do that at all.

The big question is, WHY was it in their best interest? Are they offering a lower compensation package to involuntary RIFs? If so, that is a change from past RIFs. At least waiting for the Sept 4, you get two weeks more employment.

Some people were told to take the VSO as it was in their best interest... How is that fair that some people were given a heads up that they are on the hit list but others will be blindsided on Sept. 4th....
