"There is no 'chummy' factor" Hu? How naive are you? This goes on in almost every company in America, especially the larger ones. The only ones claiming this is not so are the very people playing that game.

29597: You're right, this is a discussion board although I find it more and more to be a lurking place for cranks and bullies. I was discussing the idea that no one here, no one, can answer that question for you definitively. I've gone through 3 layoffs here. They come out of the blue. Even my direct manager had less than a day's notice when he got the call that people were being laid off. Yeah, I think advisers will be laid off in pgh and phx along with faculty and management.

29590 First off this is a "discussion board" that is specifically about "edmc layoffs". I think that my question couldn't have been more appropriate. Secondly, my question did NOT ask for advice on how to handle any of this. I have absolutely no anxiety about this issue and am not worrying at all. My situation is actually quite ideal. But that wasn't my topic. I simply wanted to see if anyone had any insight to the answer to my question.

What I mean is asking unanswerable questions such as "Do you guys think that advisors in the pgh and phx centers will get laid off?" are just going to frustrate you and add to your anxiety. If I say 'no' will it help? no. Because no one knows. If I say 'yes' will it satisfy you? No, you'll second guess me and continue worrying. Just assume there is a substantial possibility you'll be laid off, and work on your alternatives as best you can. That's my advice.

Yah, there's no chummy factor in the center either. The mgmt has no say whatsoever in who get's let go.

And 29539 the reason I think about it?

Uh. Cause it's my job?

29578: Perhaps in your dept, not online faculty however. There is no 'chummy' factor.

Nope, its not an algorithm, its who you know. Good people get cut because they are not chummy with the management. Seen it happen many times. Cuts are never across the board, senior management never seems to be wiped out in big chunks like they to with the instructors. Regular colleges run on 1/4 the amount of management staff that EDMC has and do a better job.

Who knows? Why think about it? My experience is that cuts are across the board. In more bloated departments there are more cuts. And oddly, cuts appear not be performance, pay, or seniority related. We think they use a randomized algorithm to dodge any discrimination lawsuits. Some of the best have been cut in my dept previously.
