Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

You know there's a problem as an instructor when you are not judged by your teaching ability, but rather are judged by your Outreach skills.

Sad. Sad. Sad. And leadership seems to feel no shame about it.

I knew I was done teaching for the "school" when they started to put more effort into retaining bad students than having us teach. I would like to know how we can be held accountable for students not participating in the class? Taking online classes requires discipline and determination. Students are given due dates to post on the discussion boards and complete their assignments. We are the required to give them extensions to turn in their work. Bottom line is when are we going to start holding the students responsible and stop holding their hands? I also teach at AMU, which has been a breath of fresh air. Good students (a lot have military backgrounds) and great managers. Makes me believe that there is hope that an online education program can be successful.

I was an adjunct until this term. Not enough students. Proof. I'm out. They have a reason to PIP but it makes no sense, since you are at will and they can fire (or you can leave) for any reason. POPs are usually used as a way to save a full time job. But who knows? The place sounds like a train wreck.

131, my guess is that managers, ADs and the like, are trying to do one of 2 things: 1) they are trying to leave a paper trail showing how busy they are to save their own jobs and/or 2) they are under huge pressure from 4th floor to retain students at all costs. Remember, every student is critical now, since it is our sole source of income. While numbers mattered before, Fs didn't. Now they can't afford to let students fail and drop out. So I guess the PIPs are your warning.

I am online and got the PIP. Five years of excellent reviews right before this term. I guess I didn't do enough outreach via phone and document in Talisma. I refuse to do it on my cellphone and give the students my personal phone number. With all the problems with Skype earlier I didn't do any phone calls this term. I did do some emails and a little documentation in Talisma. But I refuse to be a babysitter. I had already decided this was my last term before getting the PIP. I am not sure why they are giving adjuncts PIP's (I know of several good instructors who have gotten them). All they have to do for the adjuncts is to not assign them new classes next term. All I can guess is that they are doing it to cover their as**es and show that they are busy checking up on adjuncts.

Sad, but it will be nice to have weekends off and holidays. Five years of everyday logging in, checking emails etc. It use to be a nice place to "teach", now it is just babysitting (and I do mean babysitting).

It's sad you think CCI is a school. It isn't, it is just a vessel for government money, disguised as a school. Instruction doesn't count, only asses in classes.

35041 are you online or on-ground? I fear that I may be getting some kind of PIP as well, and am curious what to expect. Any info wouldbe appreciated.

In class... We should lift the no cell phone policy and gave student do outreach. Since that what instructors do, students should follow suit

This is exactly why I am done at the end of this term. I was put on a PIP for not doing enough outreach. Sad....I should have quit back in Jan when all this downturn started. Better late than never.

It's incredibly sad that our evaluations are primarily based on how many emails we missed or how many outreach interactions we didn't do, rather than our connections with the students. Then again, there's little opportunity to actually teach to begin with.
