Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Everest Online has stooped to a new low...

We received a report of instructors that have high student failure rates. The laughable part is that the instructors on the list are the ones that take the most time with grading according to established quality rubrics and providing detailed feedback, rather than grade in 5 minutes and give full points for effort. They don't settle for crap work from those students that actually submit assignments. These are the top instructors and are essentially being told that they are in need of improvement for failing too many students, and should be grading easier! What a bunch of BS.

616: Troll, Your ridiculous comment blatantly shows that everyone obviously passed you through high school...when you should have failed.

You think Everest is the only college that has students failing that management pressures instructors into passing? See NCAA Barney, it's part of the college system. Just because your a nerd does t mean everyone else is. Life isn't all roses, these things happen and will continue he to happen. Besides college education is over rated. Pass the students and let them get in with their lives

You shouldn't be teaching for any CCI brand unless you realize that these are just pretend "colleges" and pretend "classes" that you are paid to teach. It's not as bad at CCI as it is at UNC-Chapel Hill, but it's bad.

I am an instructor and I believe that the report described by the OP has existed for some time. And we all know that there is an "attrition by instructor" report. If this info is to be used for evaluative purposes, I would like an amendment to my contract which reads "instructor is to view every student as an income stream and your single highest priority is to preserve that income stream". In which case I would not sign the contract, but would send it to every media outlet I can find. A PIP? Bring it!

I came to EOU a couple years ago, coming from ITT. Our mgt must golf with theirs, as ITT has done this for years (calling it "student success rates"). If students fail (deservingly or not) it's the instructor's fault and if their student success rates fall too low they get removed (not brought back next term if adjunct, PIP if FTF).

This is Corinthian's main standard for retaining or firing instructors. What management claims is that if students fail, it's the instructor's fault for not teaching them. Of course, the result is that instructors pass all students who have done any work. Those who actually attempt to teach and fail students who do not do work are let go. What good is it to not have students receiving loans? And yes, instructors at my campus who have failed "too many" students have been fired.

Is there any doubt that all Jack(ass) cares about is $$$. The only extent he (and management) cares about students is their ability to get their student loan funds into CCi. No "proof" needed.

From the 10/24 SOS meeting minutes sent to all CIS PLs, Full Time, and Adjuncts, agenda item #3 stated, "CAO and student GPA. Sent directly to the dean. In CGS2060 there were 507 students <45% last term. The list included the 9 instructors with the highest failure rate. Requested "All monitoring reports from Q1". We will probably be asked for our remediation plans: a) Mentor pairs, 2) Live Lessons, c) Training on outreach content". In addition, we were told to warn affected instructors of an improvement plan (PIP).

@525: I assure you that there was an email to all PDs. The PLs were then asked to notify affected instructors. No BS here. This is all true. In fact, it was discussed in our SOS meeting with minutes distributed to all. The report of those instructors came from the Chief Academic Officer (CAO).

I'll fly the B.S. flag on this post. There was no email.

In the bizarre, twisted world of "education" at CCI, failure is defined as the absence of a student to contribute Title IV funding. As such, students can never fail - only instructors who are unable to somehow keep them enrolled aqnd passing, no matter what. Anyone else feel like they need a shower?

The profit maximizers are out of control. They are like machines, only looking at numbers, not the bigger picture. Reputation.

Awful...these instructors need to send any improvement plan to the Department of Ed and Monitor. This is a huge moral and ethical concern, which is nothing new to cci. Shame on the school for blaming instructors on doing their jobs.

The purpose of the report is to put these instructors on an "improvement plan". No joke.

Wow,it is extremely sad to see instructors being penalized for doing what is right. If a student is not submitting quality work or not participating, then they DESERVE to fail. This is supposed to be college, not romper room. Those who should take the blame for failures are upper management who knowingly enroll students that are not prepared for college or are in it for the stipend check only, dump them into classes, and then blame instructors for not passing them. Unbelievable!!

What was the purpose of the report? To praise those who actually hold the students to the work?
