What motivates you to stay on?

First of all, I would like to express my deep sympathy for those who were laid off. I hope you can all find opportunities elsewhere. I am not sure yet if my name is on the list

Over the past 2-3 years, the work culture has taken a major nosedive. Late hours, squeezing of resources, endless trips to Korea and China. Working weekends and long weekends has become a norm. However, fair compensation was provided in the form of bonuses, especially in the fall review cycle. The bonuses were a pittance this time and the licensing situation was used as a convenient excuse

So, what really motivates people to stay on? I am barely able to see my kid and wife during weekdays and even the weekends sometimes. If this trend continues, there is simply no point in staying on. You spend a ridiculous amount of time putting in the best years of your life for a corporation, only to be let go due to 'business' reasons

Unfortunately, it's pretty much the same everywhere for engineers in general in the private sector: long hours + weekends. So the actual amount of dollars that you earn per hour won't be a lot above the minimum wage.

Considering the volatility of other wireless companies some of which don't even exist anymore (Nokia, Nortel, Kyocera, TI) QC IS pretty stable. I've been here for 10 years, I've never experienced layoffs once until now.

Yeah, stable until you get axed. Better to pony up the dough, take on more debt, and move up north where there are more options. It doesn't matter of cost of living is lower in SD if you don't have a job.

There aren't many other wireless or technology companies to work for in San Diego. In the bay area yes but the cost of living is much higher there. There are not many financial direct incentives to stay on but living in San Diego and working for a stable company is a luxury by itself.
