Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

SUO AM's forcing OT???? Is that legal? Who is the culprits?

Was anyone else forced, I mean strongly suggested to work last Saturday or MLK day? We were. What sucks is that I won't even get OT pay for it. Making it worse, I now need to adjust my schedule of I want to leave at 4 on Friday. How is this fair? Force me to work OT for non OT pay, then make me adjust my schedule? I am so sick of these AM's and CD's thinking they can do what they want, when they want, how they want. Anyone else experience this? And from who? Don't be afraid of push back....

Are you treated fair? No. Are you treated with respect? No. Is this company a joke? Yes. Would you get treated better elsewhere? Yes. Are they breaking the law when it comes to asking people to work weekends? Unfortunately No.

Just to clarify. Pennsylvania is an "At-Will" state. Meaning, you and your employer can separate for any reason at any time. Unfortunately they can require you to work Saturdays, Sundays, or any other day that they want. If you do not oblige, they do have the right to terminate you (Which may actually be the best thing that ever happens to you). They are required by law to pay any hours over 40 worked per week at time and a half for all non-exempt employees. To that point, if you work over 40 hours during the week of a paid holiday, you will need to work 40 actual hours before being paid OT rate. The only way you might be able to get around working these weekends is by claiming some sort of religious affiation that requires you not to work weekends. Being the smile balls that EDMC is, they will find another reason to fire you if you make too much noise. The only thing you can do is file for unemployment. So bottom line, get back to your desks and make calls. OR get out and move on.

They aren't sexist or racist, they want everyone coming in on days off, regardless of sex or race. On my last review my MGR made a point of telling me that I never come in on Saturdays or stay late. One thing should have nothing to do with the other. I heard rumors about this policy that should not force me to switch my schedule. Anyone know anything about it? Are we being treated fairly?

JD, I knew that University of Phoenix management was full of homophobes, racists, sexists, etc. but I have to wonder, is this an industry thing?

59444 - who is the HR person in that building? There is a company policy in ace that says that holiday pay should be paid for your scheduled day. You should not be forced to change your schedule at all.

Have you all got nothing better to do on your lunch break? Now it's the race card? Quit bitching and get back to work.

That comes from the top. I have heard my Mgr say many times, who's coming in Saturday to call 1 posters? Or VM, JG want at least 2 reps per team here. Actually I don't mind, I like the extra ching in my pocket.

My mistake, EDMC has no real ties to the Black community. You're screwed.

Hearing stories like this makes me SO glad I left. Unfortunately they can do whatever they want. If you don't agree, the only thing you can do is quit, or wait to get fired like the others.

@Anonymous59444, University of Phoenix graduates more African Americans than any other college. It has had ties to civil rights activist Al Sharpton for years, through Education Nation on MSNBC. Apollo Group/Phoenix now has a strong relationship with 47 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with UoP credits actually transferable to HBCUs programs...and you are saying that they made you work on MLK Day, and WITHOUT OVERTIME? Have you considered organizing a union (SEIU, Teamsters, AFT, etc.) or are you too afraid of the flack? If you are interested, send me an anonymous email (my goal is to answer every email )...........http://www.wikihow.com/Send-An-Anonymous-Email...........You may also consider writing to Center for Investigative reporter Aaron Glantz...............http://cironline.org/person/aaron-glantz.......or attorney David Halperin................http://www.republicreport.org/about/.............

BTW: You know John Sperling was an AFT official?
