McCollum is trying to be funny, it's easy for him to say this as he's sitting on tens of millions of dollars (why? why? why?) and has nothing to worry about. What does this even mean? "Our First Rodeo", it's like this is a game of sorts, many people have families to support and I would no be joking like this when it comes to Halliburton layoffs - he should be humble and somber and try to not be funny today.

It's a very poor choice of words, at the same time they reflect determination and strength in spite of trouble. I think it was a calculated move and that they care less about emotions of laid off folk and more about how the Street perceives their level of concern with the situation. I do not like it but I understand it.

Anon60212's comments are not to be discounted, i do not know enough to agree or disagree with the comments. I think they "hit the mark" so to speak, sorry about that, especially given if you view things from "your" perspective. 60212 will find those comments comforting. His perspective though may not be the same as others, and that is how things get taken out of context. Insensitivity, also plays a role. For example, Halliburton recent comments, and this is in the public domain, search on it. This text appears in articles from several places. From Oilpro dot com, writer J. Triepke. "Directly responding, HAL CEO Lesar said: "I've heard the word 'distraction.' We've been through asbestos, we've been through Macondo, we've been through the Iraq war. You know us, we are the execution company. We aren't going to be distracted." Execution? I should imagine I am over reacting, but maybe the folks over in marketing should start coaching a new slogan huh? Honestly, should not a person of his stature and education pick his words more carefully? It's all a matter of perspective, or is it insensitivity.

KPRC just opened the news with a 3 minute long commentary on major cuts at Halliburton in Houston. Layoff is finally here. http://www.cnbc.com/id/102364377 Houston
Mark is a good guy, he's compassionate and I think you are taking his statement out of context, you need to chill a bit. He's saying that all will be well and that we'll overcome the challenges - it'll go down, some folks will be let go but a HUGE majority of HAL will be preserved and we will persevere. That's all what's he trying to say, chill, do not overreact, focus on your work, respect the client, deliver as expected, do hard work and all will be good - that's the American way...
