Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Layoff is biased - older and more experienced going first

If you look closely at the statistics, the Qualcomm layoffs are very biased. They hit older employees way beyond the statistical average. Is this trading experience for cheap labor or outright age discrimination.

true, next week some people are getting rolled over, these guys don't even know to write a single line of code

Just show everyone that they sit late till night and do some manual work

and these guys are being taken for company roles.

@ 60211: No. HR is only obliged to give you the contents of your employee file upon request. It's best to request these in writing with a certified mailing. And the employer doesn't have to give you even that if you have filed a lawsuit against them. (In that case you will have to get the information through discovery.) If you want statistics, you have to get them via discovery in a lawsuit, or through a filing with the EEOC or the State.

"Also new grads have no issues working 70+ hours a week." If they are, they're working alone. Been with the company 5+ years, and NOBODY work more than 50+ hours/wk. NOBODY. Those that say they do, do it because they spend so much time on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Even a 40 hour workweek now is considered overtime! 'Course if you consider time spent in meetings, or personal meetings, I guess folks would consider 50 hours/wk normal.

Maybe. But it probably has more to do with how much you make versus how old you are, though the two often go hand in hand. When employers cost cut, they tend to think "for the price of the more expensive experienced engineer, we can hire two new grads and pay them half each". Also new grads have no issues working 70+ hours a week. Consider this as "youth sourcing". Don't feel too bad, a lot of directors end up getting laid off too. At least you can still code (hopefully)

That is true, the young whipper snappers are taking over. Time for us senior citizens to open up a can of whoop tushy.
