CHK Hiring Practices (Concerning Minorities)

First of let me say I love working for CHK. I’ve been with the company for a few years now and I have aspirations of seeking a new position in another department, whether that’s a lateral move to the same salary grade or possibly a step up to the next grade. Over the last 2 years I’ve applied for over 50 positions and I get turned down every time. I’m not even given the opportunity to interview. I just receive the denial email shortly after I apply. Most of my applications go to “Under Review”, but never-the-less it eventually goes to “Not Selected”. Co-workers in my same department that don’t have a degree have applied for the same requisition as me and got the job. I have a master’s degree and I wasn’t even selected for an interview. This is getting harder for me to swallow. I’m not one to evoke race into something just because it’s not going my way, and I have no proof to substantiate unequal treatment, but I can’t lie - in the back of my mind I wonder if there is some disparity because I’m black. I have won personal awards from my department. I’m looked at as a hard worker. I get along with everyone. I’m not sure what gives.

I am who, congratulations! Your complete lack of understanding the networking process and being unwilling to engage in conversation with people that could potentially help you in your career will ensure that you stay in your current role. Maybe if you stop acting so entitled and do some research on how to succeed, you could make a change. Your "pride" is nothing more than ignorance. Also, if you think grammar or spelling is not taken into consideration when seeking a new position, you are sadly mistaken. Stop acting like you deserve better than you've got and do the work.

It's not ass kissing - it's networking. People seem to think that just because they have the resume to apply for something that they should be automatically interviewed and hired. Problem is, you and 500 other people are all doing and thinking the same thing. It's the networking that makes you stand out from the rest. Right or wrong, that's how it is everywhere.

So ass kissing is the best way to get noticed at Chesapeake.That was some real professional advice. To sum it up buying lunch, kissing ass and lastly present your qualifications.After all of this is done you might get the job you want.No i past on this process. PRIDE is to expensive in life and there is no job on earth that i can earn enough money to buy my pride. It is a shame that good old fashioned ass kissing is now mistaken for professional development. I'm done. Don't people know ass kissing make you stink.....

As someone who has been through the internal transfer process, I can assure you that it has very little to do with HR. HR is simply the middle man. If your resume matches up with the job requirements or preferred experience, it is then passed on to the hiring manager for the position. Your best bet is to decide which group you would like to be in. No more applying just to get out of your current job. Once you have decided on the group, you have to start building a relationship with the hiring manager, or the most senior person in the group. Ask them out to lunch. Very few people will turn down a free meal. Let them know that you're interested in joining their group and lay out your qualifications during lunch. In your initial email, just say that you're very interested in their role with the company and would like the opportunity to learn more about it. Once you establish this relationship, your chances of landing with the group will increase significantly, depending on your experience, educational background, and general fit with the other employees. People that have these established relationships are far more likely to make the transition. I hope it works out for you.

Anonymous63427 – You obviously didn’t read my post. I tried to be as objective as I possibly could. I would like for you to take a second and re-read my post. Ok, now that you have hopefully re-read my original post, let me say this. It’s people like you that really irk me. So I go straight to discrimination? Are you kidding me? There are so many bright and talented people at CHK that are so deserving of the opportunities given to them. I just feel like I’m one of those bright and talented individuals. I’m not saying whether or not I deserve a job, but I am saying that my credentials should at least warrant me an interview. It’s funny to me that you point out what you believe may be negatives about me. I’m confused as to why you have to have those assumptions about me, but anyway let me address a few. I don’t use much vacation. I carried over more than the 120 hours this year, so I lost some PTO. I carried over more than 80 the previous year, so I lost PTO that year as well. I’m at work every day trying to make a difference. I strongly believe in Doug’s vision/plan he has placed in front of us and I want to do my part in helping CHK obtain those goals. As for how I’m rated by my manager. I have an award framed on my wall right now that is a direct result of my manager nominating me for it. My reviews are high. Honestly my group makes me feel like the most interesting man in the world – I once won a staring contest with my own reflection. Honestly there is no reason for me to tout who I am, or what I do. I’ll try not to use any more of my PTO and I’m going to see if my manager can rate me “Godly” on my next review, instead of the usually excellent marks I’ve previous received. I’m asking for the opportunity to interview. Am I asking for too much??? Sheesh

Just irks me that people go straight to discrimination when they don't get a interview/job they think they deserve. Ever think it might be qualifications? And you may have been qualified - but the person who got the job was more qualified than you?!? Are you low rated by your current manager? Do you over use your leave? All things that could explain why you aren't selected! . SO. Go see your HR rep. Go see your employee relations person in HR. Ask questions - don't assume anything. Processes are in place to avoid discrimination so go to the source and ask your questions ..... NOT here.

You are welcome .you and I are not the only ones that is dealing with this issue. I have spoken with others that have the same thing going on with them as well . I think we all have noticed this and are we all are tried of dealing with this and fact it can be a bit stressful.Good luck and if you light the fire before one of us we will follow there are several other that read your post and we all are looking for answers as well.i wish we could talk out side this web page.Good luck .It all will work out .i am confident in justice always prevail.

"same situation" - Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Maybe there is an issue here. I've struggled with bringing this up to the ethics hotline out of fear of being black-balled in someway, but maybe this is an issue that needs to be addressed. I will have to put some thought into this, to see if this is something I should bring to their attention. I have a good dozen examples I would like to hear their rationale behind why I wasn't given an opportunity for an interview after seeing who was hired. Thanks everyone for your input. I felt like I've dealt with this long enough, so I just wanted to hear others opinions on this. I just would like the same opportunities as everyone else. I don't think this is something I should have to ask for - it should be just given.

By the way just for a black to get hired on with Chesapeake he or she are already over qualify for the job they are applying for.then once you get hired on you are stuck in that spot unless you move on to a different company.

Your thoughts and feeling are not wrong i was reading your post and i could have wrote it myself. I myself am a black employee that have been over looked time after time.i think the burden of proof its on the employer not the employee if several blacks in the company are saying the same thing this must be true

The bottom line here is that you have not networked enough to build relationships with other hiring managers. A large percentage of the jobs filled internally will go to "someone that knows someone." Most hiring managers at CHK are not skilled enough to understand that applying for 50+ jobs is not necessarily a bad thing and will exclude you based on numbers without interviewing. Another thing to consider is the amount of chatter that occurs on the back channels. As with any company, people talk. Your current boss could be the reason you are not getting opportunities. My advice would be to contact HR and start an investigation. This way you can get your boss in trouble and someone will be the scapegoat. Once you start bringing up race into the mix the game has changed.

Bigger question - what is such a significant problem in your current position/department that you feel the need to apply for other positions throughout the company. Maybe that's what you need to address with HR or the ethics line.

62222, I realize posting my concerns here wasn’t going to yield any answers. I guess I was more so looking for advice, which both you and 62203 have provided and they are legitimate issues I probably should address. I have thought about the ethics hotline, but as I said there may not be any disparity at all. I’m just seeking to understand what the issue might be. I will definitely put some thought into what you both brought up. As I look at my application history, it does go back over 2 years, but the number of applications is still high for that timeframe. About 65% of my applications are for Tech jobs within two areas of the company. Eventually, I got frustrated and broadened my search some, but still a high number of applications are concentrated to those two areas. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate it.

If you have a legitimate issue, then report it to the ethics hotline. Putting your complaints here will do nothing to help you.

Also, I agree with the other person. 50 applications in 2 years - if I were a hiring manager I would be very concerned about whether you really wanted to be in my department, or if you just wanted to get out of where you are no matter the destination.

Sorry, but... the fact that you applied to 50 positions in 2 years shows that you're just shotgunning for a new position. This means you're resume/skills are probably not a tight fit to the requirements of many (or most) of those positions.

When the O&G market gets back on its feet, I would suggest you focus on positions that you are a good fit and put your energies towards going after those FEW positions.
