Batcave how true it is. In an effort to ascertain a direct reports motivation, several conversations are needed. In that effort much can be learned about a persons life, needs and aspirations. To let go of a poor performer is not a hard decision, for good performers, it's VERY hard to keep emotions out of the conversation.

Yes I agree, I am very sorry for anyone who has lost their job as this is a horrible situation for all involved.
Even managers who have to release employees are very sad over this situation. They are given "numbers" by corporate offices but to them these numbers are names, faces, families and kids. I know the feeling and it's not one that is enjoyable to live with.
trust me as I know, there are no specific days when the cutting is done, it all depends on when the manager, HR and employees are available.
There will be rolling layoffs on a weekly basis until end of Q1.
If things do not improve after Q1 then employee releases will continue
I am sorry for anyone who has lost their job that actually worked hard. I pray you find a new and better career.
Management is kind enough to allow you to look for work the following day. It's reasoned that there will be more to look for on a Friday than a weekend. Focused unemployed is less likely to be postal.
