Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Lots of QC folks at Apple. Is that a company worth moving to?

RSU I heard are great.

Base salary not that much better.

Will senior staff engineer at QC get a principal engineer position at Apple.

What about stress levels and workload? If totally insane across the board, then maybe not worth it.

What is the point of having a rubber dull, if you still need to have small talk afterwards?

To engage in Siri-like small talk after coitus.

@63962: why would a rubber doll need an octa core processor? There is nothing you do that is more than a few Hertz.

QCOM should team up with the Octo Mom to develop and market an octo processor that puts Apple to shame. The killer app would be embedding the octo core into those creepy life like rubber sex dolls that are so popular in Japan. That would also help boost the stumbling Japanese economy. This will also free up more Asian girls to date white guys. Win Win Win all around.

@63947: you have just messed up the vision of a perfect GF, a cute professional. She can have it any way she wants. Are you going refuse a simple request? Obey!

Wouldn't know about putting from the rut. I'd say that's the exception versus the norm. That said, your best Asian women are the ones that were raised by tiger parents. Well educated (ideally from a pedigree college), over-achieving, financially responsible, and career oriented. The ones Made in the USA also tend to be much less uptight and less prudish. She'll end up doing the household accounting for you and her, because most likely she'll be much better at it than most people in this country are, including you. Oh, and you better not be one of those that are irresponsible. Even if you do manage to squeeze by under her initial phone screen and multiple onsite interviews, she'll quickly put you on a performance improvement plan if you don't shape up,and then fire you 1 month later if you don't show any progress.

@63812: I think you just flooded the resume inbox at Apple. Cute, good in bed, and pays for dinner! I will cook any day.

@Anonymous63738: the nice thing about having a woman that doesn't look like roadkill who also has a career that allows her to make more than you is that you and her can afford to eat out most of the time. And for those times that she doesn't want to, you really don't mind firing up the stove yourself so the two of you can stay home and spend time on much more important things. Like having sex.

Right now if you are still employed with QC, you might consider a lot of factors, RSU, pay, workload … However, if QC ever hit you with layoffs, you won’t be so picky. We all know that more layoffs are coming, because as time goes by it will be clear that the dead weight projects are not going anywhere. Besides, @63567 has brought the most important reason to move to SV; cuter GF. Now the question is can they cook? OK, asking for too much.

Learn to read sarcasm. I'm not mocking apple. Obviously nobody thinks 64 bit is a marketing gimmick, if they ever truly did. Hell, my cheapo chromebook is running ubuntu 64 bit. I was seriously asking what people think they will come up with, which will be taken by some as a crazy out of left field surprise of the millennium, yet wreak havoc on the industry

Full disclosure: I just collect qcom dividends. That's "work"

So what's the next "marketing gimmick" they will unleash on the industry. Their own rf chips? Baseband?

Oh, I forgot to mention one drawback about Silicon Valley for you single bachelors. On average, the women in San Diego look hotter than the majority of women in Silicon Valley (obviously). BUT, the women up here also tend to be smarter with a real career. The Asian women here are also much cuter than the ones in San Diego, especially as you get closer to SF. That's because you can find more Asian women that are professionals but aren't engineers. My new gf is a perfect example of being the rule breaker about how looks and brains must be inversely related. She's smart and good looking.

I moved up here (though I still have my vacation home in SD). I don't regret moving up here at all. Your comp package would be comparable to what you have in SD if it's 15+% more. That said, it's not just about working at Apple. It's about being in tech capital, where a reasonably capable engineer will have no problem finding many opportunities all over. In San Diego, you have a few major employers, and if you get rif'd, you have much less opportunity than you do up here. The hours are not worse than QCT. Work/life balance never existed for me in QCT, so from that perspective, it actually improved. My hours are probably worse than corporate R&D, but corporate R&D is an unrealistic country club that is an exception, not the norm. I left QC out of concern that these chips are increasing getting commoditized. Many companies are working on things in-house too :) The only other company I would have wanted to work for was Google. My ex-QC friends that ended up there love it. But unfortunately, Google didn't want me.
