Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Students

If the students that were recruited could read and write maybe this business would have a better reputation. Instead they scam people who fill out a survey about their favorite boy band and gather their information. Once this information is gathered they convince these people (who have a reading level of a 5th grader) that they should go back to school (online) to become a surgeon. It's sad actually. These people end up in debt that either we the tax payer are responsible for, or they may find themselves in quite the predicament.

What also bothers me is that the low caliber of our students affects retention in many ways. Obviously, given their poor academic skills, the students with low skills are more prone to drop out, but what I often see in the classroom is that the dedicated, talented students who enroll (yes, we do get those too) take one look around the classroom in the first few weeks and realize they are surrounded by students with, well, little dedication and talent. They think to themselves, "Why should I pay good money to stay here with these knuckleheads?" So, we lose the smart, motivated students too.
