A fellow employee just told me that he was told that there are to be two additional rounds of layoffs to take place in the coming year. I find that difficult to believe (it would just give the appearance of a continued downward spiral). Just curious if anyone has heard the same.

Anonymous57643 - most of the dudes/babes which are not mgmt that I work with that have grey or no hair are worth their $$$, if this is a large layoff, the regulatory folks will be looking at it pretty hard, so I doubt that QC will try anything funny. Do remember that some of the older folks have worked for 35+ years and may have huge equity in their properties and big savings account. If QC said, hey will give ya a years salary and keep your medical going for a year if ya leave now. I think a lot would volunteer, enough that it would help keep a bunch of less experienced engineers. Naturally, QC would need to be selective in who was allowed to volunteer.
Can anyone verify that directors get incentive bonuses for downgrading older, high cost employees so Qualcomm can terminate them without worrying about EEOC/FEHA investigations?
Agreed. Once the patent business dries up, all the lawyers will be gone along with these business types that have fat salaries and do nothing but wave their fancy degrees.
Qualcomm will be better off trimming down MBA’s and lawyers. With a few of them, you will get richer, but with too many of them you will get yourself into all sorts of trouble.
AMD knows how the layoff people.....the high ranking MBA types are let go...Qualcomm needs to get rid of non-technical MBA types people.
Qualcomm now has double the problem, in terms of ethics. Qualcomm lawyers have hired massive number of people in China to figure out how to operate in a deeply corrupt system, greasing the wheel.
Americans and Europeans are innovative and creative and that's how and why QCOM and other high tech companies started and prospered. Indians and Chinese are cheaters; all they know is copy other peoples work and you can see this in every university. I graded their homework and you can see the exact same solution across all Indians and Chinese (shameful)

America has a history of importing labor when we need them, and then dispose them to ghettos later. Perfect example is the transcontinental railway built by the Chinese labor. Now, we are saying it is the Asian labor that is the problem, when they helped to build the company.

@Anonymous56629 You are right. But one serious problem with westerners is that they still think they are exceptional and thus have difficulty working under non-whites. That need to change and it is slowly doing so. The reality is that without Chinese / Indians, Qualcomm would not have been this successful.

Making a lot of money in one thing makes you think that you are good at everything, and Qualcomm is no exception. Intel is a prime example, with all its capabilities in processor design, it could not make a dent in mobile. Qualcomm is facing the same growing pain as all other semi companies have encountered. You need to fire people, if you over hired.

as a generic customer, current mobile phones does a great job performance wise. dont think we need more than this, this is not a computer but a mobile so dont think companies have much option to go ahead in terms of versatality and new findings which can make customers upgrade their mobiles evey year or two

Qualcomm may just be a victim of its own success. There is a fundamental problem in promoting mobile phones by licensing, and at the same time building chips to compete with your customers. It is inevitable that you use licensing to muscle out your competitors, and that is at the center of every government investigation, including Korea, Japan, EU, US, China, etc. China is no exception in challenging Qualcomm. The only difference is that China operates under communist system, and it does what is good for the masses.

I don't think San Diego can absorb the first round of laid off people let alone two more layoffs...
Qualcomm has over hired with the expectation of growth. Now that China decision is coming, and success/failure of new developments are becoming more clear, there is no where to go but lay off people. It is ashamed to sell us the San Diego paradise and then hit us with the bad news. SD cannot absorb the number engineers Qualcomm is about to lay off.
More layoffs would stink. There are already enough buildings around San diego with for lease signs.

can be true, will mobile companies like samsung and others reducing their product lines , don't think Qcom will require more people to manage work, if i remember qcom had 31000 employees listed last year in wikipedia, now its 25000 , can someone confirm this ?
