"Every expat I know" is the basis for your statements. Never been on expat assignment yourself? No, obviously not. Then your great knowledge of expat assignments is pretty shallow my dear chap.
The post you reference doesn't say anything about wanting credit for sacrifices. Just how it impacted his/her personal life, and they took full responsibility for the decision to go.
Try looking at a global map sometime, and then put little stickers where EM has offices, camps, facilities, etc. Yes, some garden spots, but lots of places where it is a real burden to "live", and no way you consider taking your family. Plus, all you do is work, usually 15 hour days at least. Due to time zone differences, your work the usual 10 hour day at your location, and then spend another 5 hours or so on the phone in meetings with HQ because they are just arriving at work when you are ready to go to bed. Did it for years. Phone would ring all hours of the night, every night.
Old days were such that you moved where the company said, or else your career progression was pretty much over. Maybe that has changed a bit now. EM in particular liked to offer bad expat assignments as you approached retirement, because what choice did you have.
So don't lecture us on expat assignments when everything you know about the subject comes from hanging around the break room. Live it, then speak with at least a bit of knowledge.
