Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Can ExxonMobil Layoff the Right People?

If this is happening it needs to be done right. Could the corporation lay-off truly deserving ones instead of the productive worker bees? It needs to get rid of:

[1]. 70% of supervisors, managers and VPs
[2]. 75% of people who are on ex-pat assignments including those who are always nagging for one
[3]. Darren Woods and 85% of people within three layers of him
[4]. 75% of the people who held President position in any of the organizations in the past 8 years
[5]. All staff that has shown signs of misusing company privileges as personal perks —one example is people who make frivolous international trips

"Every expat I know" is the basis for your statements. Never been on expat assignment yourself? No, obviously not. Then your great knowledge of expat assignments is pretty shallow my dear chap.

The post you reference doesn't say anything about wanting credit for sacrifices. Just how it impacted his/her personal life, and they took full responsibility for the decision to go.

Try looking at a global map sometime, and then put little stickers where EM has offices, camps, facilities, etc. Yes, some garden spots, but lots of places where it is a real burden to "live", and no way you consider taking your family. Plus, all you do is work, usually 15 hour days at least. Due to time zone differences, your work the usual 10 hour day at your location, and then spend another 5 hours or so on the phone in meetings with HQ because they are just arriving at work when you are ready to go to bed. Did it for years. Phone would ring all hours of the night, every night.

Old days were such that you moved where the company said, or else your career progression was pretty much over. Maybe that has changed a bit now. EM in particular liked to offer bad expat assignments as you approached retirement, because what choice did you have.

So don't lecture us on expat assignments when everything you know about the subject comes from hanging around the break room. Live it, then speak with at least a bit of knowledge.

Don't throw sacrifice nonsense. Every expat I came across went to those assignments for one of the following two reasons:

For personal financial benefits
For career advantage over other hard working fellows

No one cared about adding real value to the company by focusing on the work and not the perks. There is a reason that our corporation has "serial expatists." The corporation is doomed not all due to this reason but this is just one example among hundreds.

How do you go on an international trip without your supervisor knowing beforehand?

I think we all know that it is the least talented and most unproductive people who are the decision makers in this process. Unfortunately, they’re not stupid enough to nominate themselves for either program.

Most of the expats I met had their families moved with them.

I have seen people going on frivolous international trip, getting caught and then complaining against their supervisor for catching them. Those folks are happily cruising in this company.

This kind of senseless ranting by OP does no good. You ever do an expat assignment? I spent years away from my family in a country that few would go to. Yes, I got paid well for it, but it brought an enormous personal cost with it. But, it was my choice.

Being a supervisor, manager, expat, or whatever doesn't automatically mean you are worthless and need to go. Also doesn't mean you are good and should stay. Evaluate people on their contributions and what skills, experience and knowledge they bring, not by their title or where they work.

So by your own standards, you must be ok with managers, expats, etc. saying that staff worker bees that won't accept a tough foreign assignment and will never be management material are dead weight and need to go? Like it as well when tables are turned? Both arguments are equally ridiculous.

Statements like yours just pour more poison and hate into the system. Grow up.

The company needs to find untalented and career hungry brown nosers who create extremely unhealthy work environment for productive people forcing them to leave. Could the example include insecure, shameless back stabbing Upstream Integrated Solution RTD supervisors operating in the broader subsurface, drilling and wells domain?
