Know more than your boss - that’s not too difficult these days. Become the expert. Reverse the boss and subordinate role. Knowledge is power.
They want us to collaborate, right? Create a coalition. Cultivate relationships and then use your power as a group to exert influence.
Read a good book on the Power of Persuasion. So simple and effective, your bosses won’t know what hit them. Use it to argue for or against ideas and decisions that have a materiel impact on you and your coworkers.
Document more than you think you should. You recommended against a change and noted the potential downstream effects to your bosses and they moved forward anyway? Write it all down. Names, dates, conversations, everything. They will deny and deflect — protect thyself. Your manager encourage you to cut costs, increase profits in a way that goes against Code of Conduct? Document.
They want you to cross-train? Detail your job duties for “workforce sustainability”? Suuure - give them the bare basics. Don’t share the secrets that help you to be more efficient and effective. The “old me” would have naively handed over everything. The “new me” has watched too many good people be shown the door.
Learn to say no in a tactful way and set solid boundaries. Nobody was on their deathbed wishing they had worked more in life.
Godspeed.
