Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

XOM SSHE

There’s a lot of info on here about the toxicity in EMIT, Upstream, and many other technical roles. Not much info on SSHE.

I worked a SSHE role for a few years before being piped off in 2020, and I don’t think I’ve ever worked a more toxic and political role in my life. Everything was about visibility and kissing the right a$$. We were even encouraged to find a mentor aka. Sponsor.. it was basically expected if you wanted any kind of success and longevity.

The name of the game in SSHE was to constantly justify your existence since by default, since we don’t really contribute to the bottom line from a business perspective..

Those of you who worked or currently work SSHE, how are you holding up?

And those of you who work or have worked closely with SSHE, what are your thoughts?

@1lwq - that’s the same as saying the guy who cleans the toilets has marketable skills to another company. It doesn’t mean that they are highly skilled - just that everyone has a toilet or a dumping ground for useless employees !

SSHE in XOM is very toxic compared to the equivalent in other companies. Their supervisors are cowards and have no back to protect their staff. SSHE supervisors have no empathy and discriminate against all kinds of vulnerable personnel.

E&PS SSHE is the most useless group of people i ever worked with. They dont do sh-t, they only get involved when sh-t has already happened. Bunch of worthless trash mfkers.

@1vff+1feN0LZy That's definitely wrong, SSH&E people are some of the most marketable/transferrable in the company. Maybe IT, legal, and tax/accounting are slightly more transferrable, but SSH&E is less industry-specific than any of the other engineering disciplines at XOM. Tons of EHS headhunters are making bank off of the Exxodus right now - I'm getting messages a few times per week.

If SHE was seen as equally important as the other groups, the head of SHE would get VP title.

And they’re getting bigger in the new GOS organization taking on maintenance. If anyone actually audited the organizations the report would be appalling.

The nice thing about SSHE is that not only are you not considered much at XOM, you don’t have any externally marketable skills either

Similar to ITRM, in the sense that it’s a good and necessary idea, but packed with the worst bureaucrats in the company that take away any semblance of practical value.

SSHE has been a dumping ground for low performers for decades. If you are transferes to SSHE it is pretty much a one way ticket to low ranking.

As for those saying executives don’t value safety they do insomuch as it impacts their bonus which is why if you’ve been in SSHE you have also seen the mental gymnastics we go through to lowball the severity of incidents.

I remember - 30 years ago - if a member of staff was useless at anything technical, they were moved off to SHE, so that they “couldn’t do any damage”. If they proved to be useless in SHE, then they were shunted off to HR until they retired.

Unfortunately, there is no way to escape the fact that regular staff in SHE and HR are the bottom of the pile in EM. Even the managers in those departments will be the bottom ranked managers in their group.

SHE is the only department that I know of that is mandated to average significantly less that 50 RG.

Save those RG points for hot shots in Development Planning, that averages far above 50.

SHE is Systematically bottom of the bucket in the eyes on EM Execs.

Safety not so valued at EM.

I like how they are supposed to assist operations but in the end, just boss everyone around and come out with new initiatives every 6 months.
