Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Thomson Reuters: A tale of wokeness?

Well, color me surprised! Thomson Reuters has unleashed a tsunami of promotions for women and people of color that even the most cynical among us couldn't have predicted.

Apparently, Thomson Reuters is now on a mission to collect diversity badges like kids on a scavenger hunt. With targets like 50% women in Product Engineering leadership and a whopping 60% women in Product Management, Reuters, and Marketing leadership, it seems they've set sail on the good ship Tokenism.

With a limited supply of TR3-0 roles, are we witnessing a scramble to fill leadership positions with anyone who fits the diversity bill, regardless of actual talent? Or perhaps, by some miraculous stroke of luck, Thomson Reuters stumbled upon a treasure trove of highly qualified candidates they somehow missed until now?

Is it time to leave this altar of wokeness?

@Lzxb+1rM2riB8 Calling them that is an insult to the dunce community.

Anyone that uses 'woke' as a pejorative is a dunce.

Both can be true. Meritocracy and diversity should coexist.

That's a swell idea. Some of us are old enough to remember when "meritocracy" was very subjective as to who had merit.

Here is an idea to consider, why not just hire people based on a meritocracy?

Halfway through Global Learning Day and it looks like good ole TR to me. Yes, seeing quite a few women on the panels, but where’s all the people of color? Asking for a friend.

Congrates on the promotion @ivsp+1rM2riB8. Curious to know percentage wise how big of a pay increase did you get? Where you able to negotiate for any changes to your pay?

My assumption was you got around a 10% bump, as that seems to be fairly consistent for most promotions.

Just curious

@ivsp+1rM2riB8 Congrats on your promotion. The original post was written by a very insecure individual. A bigot too.

It is really disappointing to see how many people Up Voted this post and it’s very telling. TR is more committed to AI than diversity, especially in the US. Yet you feel like something is being taken from you or you’re being overlooked because a VERY small percentage of people who don’t look like you are finally getting well deserved opportunities? Don’t worry. They aren’t treated well enough to stay so you will likely outlast them even if you don’t outperform them.

@8ldw+1rM2riB8 Any promotion earned, regardless of gender, is wonderful. Where TR fails, at least in my personal experience, is that promotions aren't based on what you earn and value you (or team if you're in a mgr role) create or bolster in support of the various businesses; they are largely based on your internal network of friends in higher places.

Perhaps this isn't true in all pockets of the company, but it's certainly been my experience, and why TR0-TR3 are generally placed at one of the hub locations (Toronto, Zug, MSP, Dallas, etc) rather than remote, and TR0-3 who are remote typically don't last long.

Promoting woman to any upper management position is wonderful!

When a woman than must behave like a man to keep the job, is the TR trap.

Thomson Reuters has always been a left-wing organization, at least Reuters has always been that way. They make you take all these silly DEI courses and other nonsensical training.

Talking about seeing a white man get promoted over women. It has been years since I've seen a white man get promoted. I only see non whites getting promoted and it has been like this for years.

For years we watched (white) men get promoted over deserving, qualified women. We did their work and they took credit for our ideas. That was unfair and demoralizing.

Now THIS is what it looks like when women and BIPOC get the recognition they deserve. It’s the right thing to do.

Fixing inequity may feel unfair to those who were previously given an unfair advantage. Maybe those complaining should ask those of us who have been around for a while what it was like for us in the past.

And a follow up. If you hiring to fill some race or s-x quota. You are hiring for mediocrity and it is doomed to fail in the long run. The good talent will get tired of that and run. And then you are left with people that are not the best talent. And then failure is forgone conclusion.

You should always strive to hire and promote the best. Doesn't matter what their physical attributes are. Doing anything else is to settle for mediocrity. And if you are doing so, your only hope is that other corporations are also hiring/promoting mediocre people. Otherwise, you will lose the good talent and other corporations will beat you. And then you cease to exist.

“It’s often been said that pay for women is only a portion of that of men“

What a BS. For the same role with same outcome in the same location, I have never seen men and women paid differently. As a people manager, I am aware of compensation.

I don’t know about tokenism but I know there is active push to have more women in leadership roles at TR. if someone doesn’t like then leave.

Just to be an a-s…..

It’s often been said that pay for women is only a portion of that of men

And we all know TR is cheap as f*ck.

So maybe it’s not tokenism, but just a way to save a buck.

In all seriousness talent is not determined by s-x, color, region, etc.

There a lots of talent people of every cohort in the world.

I have had the pleasure of working with quite a few over the years.

True. This will be norm going forward. There are so few women in AI, TR will promote only women to balance.
