Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Next major layoff based on who uses AI?

Just a thought… but Dan made a specific comment about 88% of the company is “using” AI, and we should encourage the other 12% blah blah…..

Anyone else thinking that metric will be used against us for the next round of layoffs? Checking to see how much we use AI?

Our daughter got riffed after 20 years in 2025. SHE was one of the few who was using AI which increased her output quite a bit in the months before she got riffed. IF you are in IT related job, update your skills so that WHEN/IF you get riffed, you have more tools in your tool box! When I worked in IT in the 70s, 80s and 90s, that is what I did! Two Masters' and plenty of experience. I bit the bullet and went to the local Community College and took 44 credits in the internet ( it was just starting) and more programming languages. I NEVER regretted the investment of time and tuition was pretty inexpensive.

AI is a good tool, but not a end to end solution. Its amazing to me that people entertain the fantasy that it is more than that. Maybe some day. We are a long way from end to end.
What is farbmore interesting is the attacks on human labor and their families and how quickly Verizon is, without hesitation, to discard them in pursuit of better profits and c-suite pay packages.

Seriously be real about this whole AI thing. There are just some jobs that AI just doesn't justify to use. It is a tool like other tools we use, most are broken tools, but they are just that tools. Sometimes you just dont need them to complete tasks. Can't RIF people just because they get their jobs done efficiently without using AI or other tools. That is ridiculous and short sighted.

I hear they are using AI to determine who isn’t busy. I know someone received an email because their calendar wasn’t full enough. Big brother is watching….

@a3

Do tell, how have you best utilized AI to enhance your bootlicking efforts?

A developer told me that they are in fear that they will be cut, AI is doing 90% of their coding now. He said it will get to the point where Ai does 100% of the coding. The only thing preventing AI from doing 100% of the coding is that Verizon is too cheap to buy the additional AI modules required to complete the code for the API interface. So that is what he is doing.

Usage is not to be confused with quality usage. I see a lot of AI slop.

@OP Perhaps. So don't be one of the 12%.

Seriously, they use AI to judge AI prompts and look for entrepreneurship prompt leaders/engineers/ops. If i give a budget of 100,000 to a team to use AI, I better see some serious software developed and deployed in production.

No worries, I see no personality of such so far. There will be layoffs and new batch of engineers will come in, or just simply softwares purchased without licenses.

Ironically if you are a AI expert or Tech Savvy you are the first on the list for RIF! You know why? The AI expert knows the limitations of AI and what to watch out for!

They are gonna tell us all to use AI then give us a pittance of a budget to use it after laying off 80% of our team.

@a3 so by that response, all of field operations should be let go? I’m assuming your job is nothing more than useless slide decks and spreadsheets

If you work at Verizon in July 2026 and are not using AI at work, you really should be high on the list for a layoff.
