Need to train before leaving

I have been laidoff and need to train my h1b contractor who will do my job, what options do I have?

@cb No, but they can withhold your severance, except that which is required by certain states like NJ.

And for the people in the back, not everyone loses access the day they are notified. In fact, in the 30+ years I worked there, I never knew anyone (at least in IT) who lost access before their last day.

Finally, unless it is an outsourcing situation, the most you will be asked to do is document your processes, not physically train anyone. Most managers won't expect to see you in the office again after your notification date, let alone do any actual work. Again, I can't speak to all departments, but this was the way IT worked.

A nice satisfying hot cup of Chock full of Nuts coffee. Then take him to a corporate retail location and show him how verizon csrs act in a public setting and what the reasons they com there for. When the shock ,if it ever,wears down, train him and say to yourself this isn't that bad compared to what the frontline goes through every day.

@OP Tell your manager that you’re not the best person to train your replacement and that you don’t have the bandwidth. You need to focus on your job search and on taking any online training that will help you land your next job.

What can they do? Fire you?

Go sick until your final day. Get your Doctor to sign you off with stress, anxiety and most importantly anger. Anger at the way you've been treated, anger that you were let go as your role was no longer required, but they now want you to train a replacement. And anger that you may anytime expode and say or do the wrong thing to the wrong people including customers.

Talk to HR about your options... if your position is no longer needed, why are you training anyone? It's presumed the work you do is no longer needed.... Then call the Ethics hotline for the same reason.... it may not work, but might make you feel better.

  • Be very very slow in your training. Drag your feet as much as possible.
  • Randomly inject wrong steps or information into instructs. The subtler, the better.
  • When documenting things to hand over, use the most complex, flowery, obtuse, SAT-word vocabulary and grammar that would cause a non-native English reader's mind to explode and not comprehend.
  • Mess up subject-verb agreement, and do a lot of "this first thing is that, and this second thing is this. The former is this and the latter is that" to confuse the sh-t out of them.
  • Ask insane clarifying questions whenever they ask you for help. Make them work for the help.
  • If you can, hide documentation or obfuscate it it in some way (weird filenames, encrypted zip files), etc.
  • If you are presenting something to them over screen share, go as fast as possible so as to confuse them. If they admit to being confused, start over from the beginning and go as fast as before.

@OP Confuse the sheet out of your replacement. Luckily for you a lot of our processes are confusing and illogical and that should make the task of confusing them a lot easier.

A lot of our systems require workarounds to accomplish certain tasks. Thou shall not share the workarounds! Let them figure it out on their own. It builds character!

Ask Gemini to provide the training plan and use that verbatim. Don't even try to correct obvious mistakes. Bury them in documentation. Ask Gemini, "create a bulleted list of 100 steps to do "X". Be very detailed. Use the Web or make up any steps you don't know."

Agree. Give nothing of value. Nothing against the H1B person, just don't rollover for the company. You are now competing against the company and their interests as they no longer align with yours. You owe them nothing. They want to claim they're competitive, then let them compete and pay for talent.

@OP Teach them wrong ways of doing things but present that as a correct way. You must have had some coworkers who made mistakes. Use that as inspiration.

If you were laid off, your manager must think you’re not that great. It would be rude to try and prove them wrong by doing a great job of training your replacement and teaching them all the ins and outs.

Drag your feet, talk slow, keep asking for clarification. Train only the obvious. Keep the institutional knowledge to yourself. Management has no idea what you know or don't know.
