Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Our own copilot told me I should quit...

...did this on an external AI too but translated all of my annual reviews into files, told it to parse them, told it my salary, & asked how hosed & stifled I am here compared to market. It told me not only to leave immediately (both Claude & Grok) but that while delivering more & more every year & outworking everyone else around me I've been deliberately sidelined, pushed around, & my personality used against me by my bosses in their responses to hold me down. That i'm leaving $50k/yr on the table & over the time I've been here have missed-out on $200k in earnings. No wonder I've felt so squeezed by this place & am barely surviving. Everyone else in my role & field is ki-ling it compared to me. This place su-ks & has stolen almost 10 years of career & growth from me.

I can't even get my boss on a regularly scheduled 1:1 for 15min to ESTABLISH a 1:3:5 for me after 2 years. He flaked yesterday while 'working' from India.

Combined with recently being told by my director to fudge numbers on Clarity & that my SSL usage is being tracked & used against me for (carrot dangle) prospective promotions - fu-k this place.

Let's not even discuss how I'm being split between two teams this year & how exhausting that is. They LOVE to keep me dangling in the wind moving from team to team to team - because I'll do it & can do it, I don't push back (thinking eventually SURELY some good has to come of this for me). I never get anything, all I get is hosed & progressively poorer, stolen from in lost earnings by this place. Sc--wed over at EOY in bonus while these shady executives hoard it all for themselves.

Anywhere else I'd be a senior engineer IC or manager by now. My loyalty has cost me a real career & major earnings.

I'm a swe earning under 100k after 8 fu--ing years. I'm done sulking & being a loser about it though. Now I'm on a mission.

Good job blowing me off manager, you just lost an employee.

OP here. Just wanted to say thanks for the kind words from you strangers & for sharing some of your success stories from moving-on & how I should handle this. If anything I feel less hopeless about my prospects & more determined to dump this place, asap.

Same thing for me- it said I was way underpaid and that my specific niche skillset was extremely valuable and difficult to replace.

I got a fully remote job with a 50% pay increase less than 3 weeks later. Been gone for 2 months now and it’s amazing.

Copilot su-ks btw, now that I’m somewhere with decent technology it’s clear that copilot is the absolute worst of them all.

I have been where you are at as an SWE. That's our problem. We are rational problem solvers, and so we go where we are told there is a problem and try to solve it, thinking we'll be seen. At the end of they day they will always go back to: "well, that was just part of your job." and you will always get over looked.

I stayed at a place waaaaay to long. Switching jobs is the best way to get a pay raise. I'll give you my personal career data as an SE:

Job 1 -> Job 2: 39% pay increase.
Job 2 -> Job 3: 60% pay increase ---- Job 2 is the one that i stayed at way too long...over 10 years.
Job 3 -> Job 4: 17+% pay increase + fully remote

So as you can see, there really is no incentive to stay anywhere long term with an average increase of 38%.

Get your ducks in a row, get another offer, and leave. 2 weeks notice, say thanks for the opportunity, and ride off into your new job with higher pay.

@an Between India and AI, most of us will eventually be laid off. It's just a matter of time.

You definitely need to leave asap! I am not an engineer but I work at USB making more than $100k in tech here. You are severely underpaid here. The gaslighting is insane at this company.

Are you perhaps tied here based on some kind of immigration status or something? What other leverage do they have over you that is keeping you here? It is time to go!

When the job market my changes once again to favor employ, USB will inevitably suffer the consequences. It's bound to happen and not a matter of if, but when!

I gave that a go about a month ago in Claude. It told me I was underpaid at $200K in TC and that it should be between $235K - $270K for the same role in the same city. So I looked it up and sure enough I am underpaid. Levels.fyi has good comp data for engineering and IT.

@OP At one time it did matter if you were a hard worker and a loyal employee for many years. That went down the cr-pper in the last big recession. Millennials watched their parents and grandparents getting laid off, losing their pensions, after decades of loyal service. That is why the younger generations will switch jobs in a heartbeat. No need to be loyal. Go find that new job where you are compensated for your worth. The rest of you - that have many, many years of dedicated service what are you waiting for? Severance? Why be miserable waiting for something that may never happen? You will be the one they hang onto.

The idea that working hard, being loyal, and ongoing above & beyond will lead to rewards is a lie. I have been with this company for nearly 20 years and the majority of rewards I've witnessed have been distributed to those who have failed upward and/or those who have thrown ethics out the window.

The people who are the most dedicated & knowledgeable are the ones who are ignored, held down, held back, and treated like garbage. It's shameful. But that's the U.S. Bank brand - shameful, unethical, dishonest, and disappointing.

I'd love to go elsewhere, but it would be financially foolish at this point. They can pay me to leave.

Eight years in IT here and you’re making under 100,000? Time to go. Find another job first though. USB will come to regret how they’ve treated their employees.
