Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

goodbye Dell

Got laid off last week after 10 years of work.
My manager joined the regular 1x1 on Tuesday and started reading "the script" . After that, crickets.
My VP, with whom I worked for a number of years, didn't even acknowledge me. So much for all the late night calls and weekend escalations. Not even a private reply to a goodbye email. Meh.

@jf

From your listing of 4, I agree, the first two is definitely age and salary. Perhaps throw in seniority.

@hm for me...they showed 5 people considered (by age). I was chosen. I was the oldest.

I believe the selection process is based on.

  • Salary
  • Age
  • Remote Locales
  • Nepotism (or lack thereof)

In that

M9 manager here, now demoted to i9. I had to let go 8 team members and the decision came from Sr VP, then HRBP contacted with the script and dates. My 2 levels up didn't have a clue. The decision was random, nothing based on grade, salary, performance, tenure. For example, the cheapest / newest to the role / top performer was selected to be fired - this person would've never been chosen by me or my manager (who fought to hire this person).

I heard that it was literally Sr VPs and VPs at a hotel lobby looking at excel lists and deciding this person go / this person stay. No salary, no tenure, no performance, just name.

Lessons learned: choose a good name :)

right, I've heard from a number of managers that weren't aware folks on their teams were being let go...or they had no say in the decision.

@dk

Wrong. Front line leadership do not have the final say. Leadership at the top uses information from front line leadership.

@d3 Don't be naive. Your manager is lying straight to your face. Your immediate manager is always the final say. They will never go against their upper, but they have to sign off.

@d1 I said that too to my manager. He said no, don' t worry about layoffs and bingo, next layoff, I was targeted. Apparently, he never said anything so it came from the top.

Hope you are happy with what you got for leaving
I'm hoping one day it will be me, 21 years here, over 60, remote and have already said to my manager if it saves someone else who needs the money I will go

@OP because managers at Dell have no honor, no integrity, no human decency.

It’s not the same thing, but I announced my retirement and gave the company a months notice. We had to juggle some accounts. During that month, the director and his VP did not acknowledge my departure.
Other VPs that I had worked for in the past stopped by to wish me well.
What did I expect?

If total income for the leadership is open-ended, the sky is the limit. They will take as much as they can. The powers that be want them to go as far as they can.

Goodbye, stranger, it's been nice. Hope you'll find your paradise. Tried to see your point of view. Hope your dreams will all come true. Goodbye, Mary, goodbye, Jane!
Will we ever meet again?

Sorry you were treated that way. My case was similar although my Sr Dir did call me immediately after the proverbial "reading of the script" by my "manager".

The silver lining is I no longer spend Sunday wondering if I am next on the Monday cut list.

Future is uncertain for me, but thats a daily thing at Dell.

Expecting loyalty from Dell or its untalented Manager's is moot. (But you know this now).

What still gets me is "how many billions do the execs & shareholders need"?

Cause they have no qualms about terminating long term productive employees if they can bank another buck.

Life lesson learned. Now you know that the people putting aside their life for something that in the end means nothing are the real su-kers. No one will thank you on your death bed for working a lot. Although Dell certainly tries to make the argument that they would :D

Congratulations! It'll all be fine.

No surprise there is isn't acknowledgement from leadership.

Hopefully you get a good package and can move on with life.

BTW: I see you state your "no CSG anymore". At least it gives people an idea of what is going on.
