You started during the stone age.
The end of the era is finally here!
A thumbs up from FCC!

So true. In 2001 the experts said we only had about 2 or 3 years left. I was hired in 96…couple months away from 30 years. Still here. Still waiting for the end

None of that makes me want Starlink. It would an option if it was the only option for any type of service.

@OP Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. Nothing happens. Big hit coming. 22 years later, something happens. See? I told you. You're like that hypochondriac with the tombstone that says, "I told you I was sick!"

@11n
That depends on the region. That's why Starlink has a fee of $1000- $2500 additional fees for the constraint areas.
My friend has a ($50) $35 promotion per month residential 100 meg service. He gets consistent 100-150 Mbps.
My other friend has a $120 residential Max service. He gets constant 350-500 Mbps.
I have a Starlink mini. I get 250 Mbps in Oregon but only 150 Mbps in Washington State.

Upto 400....goto any forum and most people say around 1-200 mbps. For 120 bucks a month? Oh yea, the satellite and router both need power to operate.

I have 1 gig up and down for 1/3 the cost. It also works under trees and in snow and ice storms.
You started out making a decent point about a service that could be used when there’s not an alternative…which is all Starlink is. Now you just sound like a paid shill trying to sell a product on a sight about layoffs. Pathetic.

I would think anyone working primarily with TDM services (Ds0, DS1, etc.) would be at risk.

I mean yeah, probably. Anything that's not essential to Enterprise / Backbone is probably going to get hit. If you're in Enterprise, you're probably safe.

@sk
Starlink base service of 400 Mbps for residential and 1 Gbps for business isn't subpar. The uptime is superior to any land based services Especially during the natural disasters and power outage.

Not a very good sales pitch. I’ll stick with superior service in the city. But, I have a lease on a forest service cabin that I get zero cell reception. Could be useful there if they can up the speed and get a clear path through the trees.

@k2
The Starlink residential service starts at $35 with free hardware.

The Starlink mini is even more affordable for anyone who just wants a simple voice and Internet service.
You pay $199 for the mini dish or go to Facebook marketplace and get it for $50. You pay the 1st installment for $50 and $5 per month to put it on standby. The standby mode comes with 500kbps service. Enough to make voice calls and emails. Still fast enough to go online to shop or online banking.

@k2 they have alternatives then and they will have to go somewhere else.

@gp
All correct except no one outside of very rural or off grid areas are going to pay for star link service when cheaper faster more reliable service with less constraints is available.

You must have been snoozing since the story was released back in 2024.
FCC gave all Telcos the right to shut down the service as long as you don't leave them out of service without some sort of options.
Att already started telling the customers to choose other means of options.
Here comes the Starlink with the direct cell service. Should go live well before 2029.

@f2 You're certainly worked up now. How do you manage to go through life on the edge of crisis all the time? Makes you wonder if it's worth it, doesn't it? You're such a sad person living in craven fear.

So how absurd it is saying all telcos will be closing in 2029. Step away from your keyboard until your meds kick in.

Funny how the replies typed with wringing hands get upvoted and the ones that urge calm get downvoted. It's like you all want something bad to happen. Calm TF down. Good grief, y'all are lame.

I don't know about the percentage but there will be a massive lay off before 2029.
The 2029 is when every telcos will be shutting their doors.

I did hear that there will be a RIF in May but nothing about the size or teams. That % seems crazy high.
