That's actually why I brought up the native name. Not to actually change it to that but to make the point that things have been called all kinds of names. Beijing was Peking to many. Mumbai was Bombay (and maybe Mumbai before that?). It's a little bit arrogant to have thought of changing the Gulf name now. But also, it's a whole lot arrogant to think that Gulf of Mexico has to stick "just because." It is true, that the Gulf is in the Americas, and that the USA has a bigger chunk of its coast. But one could also argue that the name change was just a cheap distraction. Probably both. Does it actually matter much? No. But it does complicate programming for international navigation groups. Perhaps needlessly. I'll argue that the USA gains nothing from the name change.

@cb

it’s cute how the people who make these arguments don’t even comprehend that they need to explain what time period we look at for this stuff and why in order to have a logical argument.

history all the way back to day 1 has land and names changing hands. why do we go with your boundary if the supposed idea is to keep “original names”?

in some cases like the native americans, they didn’t even have a western concept of political boundaries and therefore can’t have land under their own traditional beliefs. land was just whatever you’ve won in war in the last few years. the scarier thought is that it still is but we pretend it isn’t that way.

@cb By that logic, the Gulf is "Chactemal" or other words from nearby tribes.

Shell 2030 - the Gulf of “America” will have been returned to its rightful, historical name of the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell 2028 is when 60% of Gulf of America assets are deemed below economic value where assets divestment or continuance to decommissioning is the only pathway.
There’s a report on the company’s intranet on this scenario before they take it down.
So GoA has two solid years..

shell 2030

a company whose business plan is to take out loans to buy back its own stock and maintain the dividend

all assets have been sold to fund this. in fact the only other expenses remaining are the quarterly mckinsey consulting bill and payroll. all employees besides the C suite and EVPs have been fired. they still send out patronizing company wide emails.
