Heard it in the hallway

Maybe the mid and longterm strategy for the company is to keep Petrotechs in the PSG 22-24 pay grade range and not advance them more than that. It’s appealing for those who get it today but will not be so appealing down the road, where promotions will be fewer and far between.

Hpam is correct. If you one is to be promoted to PSG 22, 23 or 24, then you received that promotion plus 1 more. This is in the HR communication. PSG 25+ nothing.

Is it really true that PSGs below 25, 26, 27 are getting automatic promotions?

Two different points, one involving involuntary retirement (layoffs) pushed by the company, and another involving voluntary retirement by older employees for economic reasons (I.e., rising interest rates diminishing the lump sum pension).

@1ftb, Hmvc did not make that point. Go back and read. He said “We have heard from management...it wants to further whittle down the workforce...”, whereas you are pointing out that “interest rate rise is a concern” for this supposed group of older employees. Hogwash!!

Post ID: @Ifnp+RdqP2xu

There’s currently a group of retirement eligible employees on a knife’s edge, contemplating whether to go. Interest rate rise is a concern, and so YES, there is a group for whom the ever growing pile of BS might push them out - so Hmvc has a valid point.

Promotions of lower pay grade employees will not ensure the exit of older, and maybe, higher paid PSG employees. That’s ludicrous. A deliberate layoff of a selected group can ensure their exit. But don’t expect any group to go marching out voluntarily because lower paids were promoted. Would you?

We have heard from management in 2017 and 2018 that it wants to further whittle down the workforce through attrition.

The auto promotions of lower PSGs should ensure that many older workers will exit the workforce. This could be construed by some as age discrimination.

So much for promotions being determined (as we’ve all been told for so many years now by corporate remuneration) by an employee’s consistent (multi-year) demonstration of high performance.

We were also told for years that a PMP 2- rating is not so bad.

Time to abandon ship.

Sadly, I’m not surprised. Management are cowards. During the recent ROMs, we saw a lot of talented high-performers lose their jobs because of a single 2- rating - this because management could not make the conscientious and difficult decisions they are supposed to make (much easier for them to simply cull based on most recent PMP rating. Bunch of Caspar Milktoasts.

It's amazing that some PSG24s that just got the auto-promo have higher salaries than PSG25s that earned their promo and have been in the grade for years. So much for pay for performance. Truly disgusting that our highly compensated mgmt couldn't come up with a better solution than this cluster.

Fupf- “expendable red shirts” is a pop-culture reference to original “Star Trek” TV series. Red shirts were part of the uniforms of the Enterpise security officers and personnel, who were the most frequent casualties and most prone to being “knocked off”.

They want to push the old guys out and attract young folks to stay. However, young folks need to think if you like to be an industry which dies out when you are in your 40s.

Not true for 25-27 PSGs - the expendable “red shirts”

Looks like the OP nailed this one. Management chose the optimally idiotic way to correct under-compensating relative to market. Truly impressive.

Two promotions in six years? That is one every three years, which is long term benchmark average in Chevron. if you just show up for work you will get one every four years.

I realized the shift toward favoring certain demographics long ago. I’m a white man of Irish heritage, but years ago, I started going to tanning salons, grew out a mustache and dyed it black, took several Spanish language classes to get the accent right and I would often rub my upper body and arms with soft taco tortillas to sport that unique scent to complete my south of the border persona. I’ve been promoted twice in the last 6 years and HR loves me so much. That’s what it takes these days at Chevron to gain an edge on your colleagues.

I heard that management is still focused on getting the promotion-demographics right - so some of you really deserving folks (you know who you are) will have to wait longer.

The only overpaid people are the old guys. Chevron pays for long tenure and loyalty to the company over time. They do not pay based on merit. The good young people will not stay for long. Yes, there are entitled young brats... but the truly good young talent will not stay at Chevron for long. Some stay because they get the carrot dangled in front of them, with the thought of possible ex-pat assignments in the future or being on a fast-track list, which isn't even that fast compared to just jumping to another company.

@1eup- that's just not true about the US giving out PSGs.... there was an HR people privacy data disaster when all the supervisors were handed a file that allowed everyone to access everyone's PSGs. Of course everybody looked those up, and @eia is correct. The salaries are just not competitive. People we thought were high PSGs were actually quite low.

With the industry starting to show some faint signs of a turnaround, the promotions would have to result in a substantial salary increase to offset the petrotech bonus, else there won’t be anyone left in a couple of years. This would be a win if the salary increase does come through because that is what all benefits are based on. This is also why I am pretty sure it won’t happen.

A promotion is in jest, but truth is if oil prices hold above 65 (Brent) we will see some extraordinary efforts to retain petrotechs.

There's probably hundreds chomping at the bit to leave once things are better.
