Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I haven't gotten a raise for over 7 years

I'm not a VP of anything and I haven't gotten a raise for over 7 years. Nothing no bonus, no raise but I did get 2 "promotions" with no salary increase. I'm at the mid-point of the fake salary ranges and the explanation is that I'm being compensated within range. I agree it's difficult to leave but unless you're willing to accept never getting any more comp than you get today - you take the difficult steps to improve your situation. Move, sell your house, relocate, commute longer - if money is your primary goal then you do whatever you need to. If you chose to stay, then do it with the knowledge that it's your choice to accept whatever wages Oracle want to give you. They have no legal obligation to pay you a market wage. I'd argue they have an obligation as a company to provide better wages but they don't care if you leave and have no interest in keeping you. They want young people who will work for anything and have no interest in your expertise. Once you accept that as true, maybe it's the incentive to move yourself to another company that has a soul - Oracle does not care about employees or customers.

This is the sad reality of working at Oracle, unfortunately, I think that there is little that we can do about this. The person that posted this originally is @XpK2aP6-3bbt .

I was an Oracle manager at the time of the Sun acquisition and we were told (unofficially and in person by our VP) to not discuss any raises or promotions with STK people (only STK - not "real" Sun people) and focus our measly pot of stock options and raise money on retaining Sun HW expertise, not storage people. But the raises were small compared to what Sun was used to and many of them walked anyway. STK people were so anti-Sun to start, they also came in being anti-Oracle - lots of tension and bad feelings all the way around. Some stayed and complained about no raises but many left early on and accepted they'd never be compensated like they expected. I left after a year of trying to convince them they did actually work at Oracle and not a branch of un-integrated STK. They were under they (STK managers) were under the impression they weren't acquired by Sun or Oracle - they were a separate legal and operating entity. Not true at all, complete fantasy.

My last raise was in the StorageTek era. Sun and Oracle never gave me a salary increase, stock options or bonusses. My mgr once told me: if you are unhappy, then leave.

You only got raise only you are senior executives. Senior executives and Larry Ellison also got bonus for selling servers to Russian banks even Russia has been under US sanctions. Oracle sold millions of hardware to Russian during 2015-2016 through Turkey middleman. Elision and Oracle Executives knew it was illegal but as long as getting money from Russian, they closed their eyes to pocket the green. What Oracle did was more damage to US security than Huawei sold hardware to Iran. I surprised why US government did not investigate Oracle business practice and Oracle CEO was even sitting on White House business advising team.

This is very common at Oracle. I didn't get a raise for the first 6 years at Oracle and I got glowing yearly performance reviews. Management is trained to tell you that there was no money provided for raises, however, my former manager told me that was a bunch of lies. Orgs are provided with a budget for raises and managers disperse the money as they want. My team had a lot of SA's that were making peanuts, so the money was spent on them. Not until I had a 1:1 with my manager and told him that I would leave it they didn't give me a raise did I actually finally get a raise. I actually negotiated a 10% raise because I had gone so long without it. Also, and this is 100% true....many SA's would interview with another company, get an offer, and once presented to Oracle management, they would match the offer. I saw this happen MANY times. This is another way of strong arming Oracle into giving you a raise. S---s that you have to go to such great lengths, however, it is effective. My ex-manager told me that it's 100% sure that an offer would get matched and even suggested I get one, so I can make more money. After that I got two more small raises over the last 5 years. I was laid off in July due to the workforce reduction.

What isn't being addressed is the lack of common sense of staying at O when you're unhappy with the compensation. It will NEVER get better unless you leave and get rehired, then negotiate a better salary) Whining about unfairness and not being "appreciated" is pointless. Oracle isn't the good ship lollypop and has a mandate to keep employees happy or compensated by market rates. They can hire masses of young innocents that have delusions of big money and personal rewards, they don't need to keep anyone - they can hire the cheapest, dumbest or youngest people any day of the week and still mass produce the c%^&p, bolt on, lego apps and cloud fantasy architecture and make billions.

Unfortunately, those billions go to a few people at the top and the shareholders - not the average employees.

Morally what Oracle does is very questionable.

As an employee - if you honestly give your all to Oracle - work hard and to the best of your ability - put in your 8-10 hours a day - take weekend and out of hours calls with good grace - keep yourself up on the latest technology - always work towards customer success - and deliver against your goals.... Then Oracle should NOT play games with you.

The employee / employer relationship should be mutually respectful and this is what is missing.

Oracle will say all the right things to onboard you, but then almost immediately the games will start.

If you're the kind of person that wants to stay for 2 to 4 years and then move on, then it's not too much of a concern, but for those with 10+ years of solid, reliable and honest service just end up getting screwed and this is only "because they can".

Many folks with young families and mortgages to pay don't want to have to up and move every few years - and so are prepared to commit themselves to Oracle and give 100% for extended periods. It's these honest people who are the bedrock of many of the operations, support and delivery organizations that just get taken advantage of - "because Oracle can"

What kind of organization wants to start taking advantage of it's employees almost as soon as they're signed up ?

Most people would probably be reasonably happy if they never actually got a raise "in real terms" - but inflation is real, so getting poorer every year just breeds resentment.

Those at the top are getting 10's of millions of $ - but there's never anything for the worker bees.

If you're prepared to take a gamble - then I know of 2 people in the US who were offered a 10% hike to stay when they handed in their notice. They both left anyway... and of course if you call their bluff then so might you.

I had always expected there were people getting raises and stock options. In the 11 years I was there, I got a few stock options in the early days, and a 10% increase in salary for 11 years. I'd say the past 5 years were a big 0. Never could believe my manager when I asked about salary increases and bonuses. Now that I am a year away from the place, I am enjoying a company that shows how much they value me. That includes a bump of more than 45% in total compensation. I should have left years ago.

Raises and promotions are granted to the small elite below your SVPs, based on loyalty, not meritocracy. So you'll always see sales reps overachieving with huge bonuses as their quota was set to a "mini-me" of their sales manager's quota. Every year is the same "charade": appraisals, employees questionnaires, one to one meetings with direct managers, which will bring you zero. Some high value people got raises just announcing to quit, then they get a counteroffer to stay. ...and, you can study as much as you want or you can be your team's prime, you'll always get horizontal promotions, never vertical, and that, will not give you money raises. Last but not least, the IC's variable is getting a severe cut by formulas built to reduce your OTE artificially, not matching the current sales, but things you'll never achieve. So, good luck. Waiting for the next wave.

There are raises, bonus and stocks almost every year at Oracle. Some years it may be two of the three. If you haven’t been getting anything in 7 years, they’re taking you for granted. And BTW, the numbers used to be good in the past but laughable of late.

I’ve been getting those every year, stilll decided to leave last year after severa years

if you think you deserve more, learn what you need and prepare to leave in your terms. don't let a company make you feel you don't deserve nothing. better, get up, prepare, interview and when you feel it's right opportunity fly.
