Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Offered a job outside if VZW

I'm extremely torn right now. I was just offered a job outside of VZW doing similar work starting at $5,000 less per year. The pay cut isn't too extreme and the benefits package is similar.

The pros for accepting this offer are job security (no looming 2.0 restructure), a set in stone Monday-Friday work week, which works better for me and my family, and travel as part of the training,

The cons are that I would be leaving tens of thousands of dollars on the table by not yet being vested in my 401k and losing out on STI's in February. The other big con is that I would be starting somewhere brand new after only being with Verizon for a year and a half. There's something to be said about stability.

I want (wanted?) VZW to be the place I retired from. I really believed that when I walked in day one. My new hire experience training happened during s unique time period. It was right before the VSP, Verizon 2.0, and the overall change in culture. My new hire trainer was one of the 44,000. He was instrumental in helping me believe in VZW and the amazing opportunities.

I could really just use outside perspective from other V teamers. What would you do if you were me?

Coming to a board where l, for the most part, everyone hates their job, isn't the best place to get advice.

Talk to family, friends, etc.

Married? Talk to your wife/husband.
Single? Talk to your accountant.
Afraid? Contact people who work for this new company and just chit chat. Be there friend until you decide, and just ask them the questions like, how do you like working for XYZ.

If you’re white and over 50, take the new job. You’re days are numbered.

You won’t lose your 401k you’ll lose the company match. Look at balance by source to see how much you’ll lost.
I hope you left?

Take the new job. 1.5 years is not a long time, and $5k difference is not that much. Once taxes are taken out, you are not talking about an amount of money worth the stability you will find elsewhere. Perks at new place and just being appreciated will make up for it.

I worked for VZW for 10 years. I made great money and loved the job. But over last few years it got worse and worse. Almost a year ago I left for a mon-fri making a tad less money per year.
Happiest I’ve ever been. More family time, more free time. So much more productive in my off time.

It’s the craziest thing. I thought it was just that bad in my one area. Having watching and listening to others inside I realized it was the Entire Company. It used to be a good place to work sorta but it went to hell in a hand basket. Someone needs to do a study or write a book on how to destroy a company by performing junky acts to their employees. Its a bunch of lies until the next person or group goes until there’s no one standing or they’re completely bankrupt which btw they nearly are.

I took a $20,000/year paycut and I haven’t thought about money since I left. Worrying about how much you make is for people who don’t like their job. Get out and be happy

Go take the offer now! Been with the company a long time and I would lose alot-you no. The company is not what it was. We are no longer a company that an employee can stay and retire from.

1000 dollars(bonus) and another year and a half isn't worth being in a soul s—ing, zero moral industry. Where people just come ask you stupid questions expect you to set up a phone "that's their responsibility" by the time you take a new job in a year and a half who knows you could be making more by promotion or moving on up. Verizon is not a place to second think if you should stay. Leave, run to the hills and never look back. Monday to Friday and you get to be with family why would you even question not doing it.

I was recently faced with a nearly identical situation a few months ago. I left and it was one of the best decisions that I've made, despite being one of the most difficult. Change is never easy, but sometimes you have to go with your gut.
