Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

Just wondering

Am I the only one who really wants to leave but is scared that whatever new job I get will be the same or even worse than what I have here? I actually had an interview recently, but then I checked that company's page here and I found nearly the same complaints as we see here every day.

And if it's the same there, then what's the point of leaving?

Leave, but the key is DO NOT leave for another dying company. For Rochester, it will be tough but there are off the radar companies that are doing fine and have a solid business. Think grocery, contact lens, small banks, etc.

My suggestion would be to find a small, private owned company. I am not a Xerox Employee but I am in the industry. I also just hired a former Xerox Employee less than a year ago and he's as happy as ever. Often, we pay better or the same, have better benefits and could care less how much time you take off as long as the job is done. Now, for the other side's (prospective employers) view of people coming from Xerox. To me, Xerox is like the Government and many but not all, prospective employees from there, come with a government employee mentality. For example, I've been treated badly by Xerox Employees and they forget, I am the customer. Xerox and many of their employees forget that Xerox is no longer the top dog in the industry, they forgot their roots and some employees are just as responsible for that as management. I've found that many of them are more worried about getting six to eight weeks of vacation, than what the new company offers. I hate to break the news, but those days are over, an employer can't lose someone for nearly two months a year, this isn't the government nor education sector. Another example is, most come with a "that's not my job" mentality, they have a hard time performing or refuse to, outside their role. That's not what is going to land you a good job, we can detect these things in interviews. So in closing, accept that you want to move on but also accept that you are going to be in a different environment, the old style companies like Xerox are gone and that's why things are what they are at Xerox. People hate change and people hate the way it is. So, what's left?

the beauty now is the internet, glassdoor is a site you can get real reviews of companies (xerox 35% recommend to a friend) all companies have their bad things ,but xerox is getting worse and it is worth the jump ,make your own destiny.

Go to Glassdoor. Avoid companies with similar ratings of Xerox. There are lots of companies just as bad. If it's a public company, check that their revenue is flat or growing.

Take everything you read online with a grain of salt. When people are unhappy with their situation, they are going to whine and complain, whether it's out of their control, or completely their fault. I have no idea what company you were looking at, but gossip sites like this are full of misinformation and biased information. Look on reputable sites for information about a company you are looking at, and supplement it with info you find here, but use your gut to weigh each bit of data.

Hard to believe any company can be as bad as the situation Xerox has been in these past years ...

You did the right thing, check the companies reputation & if it’s trash AVOID. Next time do the research before the interview to not waste your time. I wish you best of luck to leave Zerox!

I was just like you, scared of change. I forced myself to find something and move on. It was the best thing I ever did.

Jump in. The waters fine. There are going to be good things and bad things about every place you go. The people at Xerox are what made it great. Our customers made it great. Upper management not so much. The guys at the top are looking to squeeze what they can for themselves and screw everyone else. They will leave Xerox teetering on the edge as they cash in. I left before I was laid off. I had a lot of years in and I'm middle-aged. I still found something but it took me 6 months of searching. If you can't afford to be out of work and you know it's coming, you may as well start looking now. Ask people that you know if they know of anything for you. It's never going to be the same but Xerox is no longer the same either.

Sounds like you might still be learning. Or a manager. I don’t know anyone that has left and found it worse and almost all say they are much happier.

If you are an unqualified manager then you may find it difficult to land something that lasts. Employees everywhere can spot that and in Rochester they are becoming wary of your brand and the things “learned” at the big X.

Just do your researcher on the company. Pick any with growth, steer clear from mature companies or companies with any history of cuts. I will never go back to a declining or low growth company again. It is also nice to work at a company which is private and not beholden to shareholders too (so no real fear of cuts to goose the stock value)

The grass is greener on the other side. Don't be afraid. Based on this whole experience, you know now how you should be treated.

I get it
It is scary
The idea of leaving MOS, Global, XBS, Xerox for a company that could potentially treat you lower than the piece of s**t they have done this past year...
Yeah, that’s a tough decision
