Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

mtech sf closing in march

from a previous thread:

"My source that has signed an NDA has informed me that they will be shutting down the sf dot com building by March. First wave if lay offs is the end of the month on January 31 and will continue until March. Official announcement will be in February. Please try to find new work else where. This company does not respect your time and resources. If you havent already been asked to relocate then it is best to start looking. Severance will be 1 week for every year you were here. They have changed the policy back in September. Be prepared, start looking , find somewhere where the company cares about the employees and its families.

@2ixy+13gCcTHA, no disrespect, but you sounds like a peon being fed lies to make yourself feel good about what's happening. We're all in this together. I don't consider still having a job at Macy's as a privilege. 680 Folsom is expensive to maintain and it was part of our offense for the longest time. Letting it go means we're retreating more and more to a defensive stance, and to what end?

Let's go back to when RB Harrison took over MCOM. He's a COO, he's a cost cutter, and he doesn't have a growth mindset. He f—ed it up. He got fired. Who's the genius who put him there to begin with? Jeff.

When RB took over, he tried to reduce the overall tech spend while maintaining the growth. MCOM was still growing double digit but slowing down. They didn't know why. Without knowing the problem(s), they couldn't come up with solution(s) and it's all back to grinding down the budget.

This is when you started seeing top talents fleeing the building. Projects got cut for no good reasons. Capital money was sent to JC to pay for expense work (it's borderline illegal). All Macy's know was defensive posture. They were also focused on paying down debts incurred during the 2005 acquisitions that doubled the number of stores.

There are two theories here. Either they really didn't know how to play offense. Or the thought of properly playing offense scared them. It was clear that having a website on it's own doesn't make a digital channel. Macy's logistics is so piss poor until today. The assortment was stunted by the NY merchants who're dinosaurs used to control which vendors get to s— on their tits, until the likes of Michael Kors realized that the milk was poisoned.

I have a prediction. Jeff will be fired soon. Look at his leadership team when he took over from TL. Look at the team now. Besides Tony Spring (Bloomies), they're all hand picked by him. This is his team. He owns all of successes and failures. Hal's departure put a dagger on his tenure at Macy's. It's only a matter of time before the board and the investors are fed up.

Another prediction: at least 4 of these people: https://www.macysinc.com/about/management-team will no longer be there 1 year from now.

Woah @2ixy+13gCcTHA, it doesn't sound like you know much about the SF office if you think it's full of boomers just showing up to get paid. And as far as resisting change to improve the site, go ahead and chalk that one up to product and marketing. As soon as Hal arrived and informed Yasir there would be no more innovation happening at MTech, we're "just retail" and keeping the lights on was our only job, technology as effectively hamstrung. Then Naveen arrived with a grudge against San Francisco because he wasn't able to make a Home Depot office work there? We never had a chance. He had his mind made up the moment he set foot in a Macy's building, SF was always on his hit list and it wasn't because of lack of innovation. Look at the mobile app for example. The team did everything he asked of them. Complete rewrite, hit all their technical goals and revenue goals besides! Did he ever congratulate them, say thank you, good job, does he even know their names? I doubt it.

Nothing cruel or unfair about closing 680 folsom, in fact it was inevitable and people should have seen this coming sooner rather than later. People there haven’t done any significant contributions to the company or the site since ages, the site still s—s! They have been opposing improvements and resisting changes which would help improve the site. Whole 680 folsom is full of boomers who wants to get paid just to show-up.

These actions are more than cruel, just heartless! I can remember when associates would be informed their jobs were eliminated and become visibly upset the store manager would just role eyes. As if saying "Get over it". The ones who were left would be forced into guilt because they were targeted as being "lucky" to have a job. No one, again, no one should be treated that way.
It is a job and people are expected to work. HOWEVER, some of these employees have been dedicated for years or months, going without lunch because they cared so much. So sorry every!

While I wouldn't be heartbroken to see HR for 680 Folsom kicked to the curb, you have to be truly evil to want to see all of the employees laid off or transferred to Georgia. Especially when you throw in HB-1 visa issues and low severance, if those rumors are true. Some of the managers were downright scary they were so incompetent, but I also worked with a lot of lovely and talented people, and I hope they come through this turmoil OK.

Too all the folks out there rooting for severance, please be advised that Macy’s has changed it’s policy “silently”, so you “may be” given one weeks worth of pay for every year of your service at Macy’s, technically/lawfully they may even by-pass that if they lay few people at a time over-time.

You never know ... How happy and liberating the closure of MCOM 680 Folsom (8th floor to 14th floor) outcome will be for an axed executive.

I doubt zuhier would sign his comments like that to let everyone know it's him... stop impersonating.

additionally, we shouldn't necessarily be happy about it, no matter how much we hate the place. it's not good for future employers to see a company of such poor reputation on our resumes. think of it that way.
