Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

EOI

I’m considering EOI after being with the company close to a decade. Without going into the reasons, I’ll like to know:

Will I qualify for unemployment if I take EOI? I am in CA. Is EOI considered a self / voluntary action, like quitting?

The company tells you it’s nobody else’s business if you pursue an EOI. Would you suggest giving your immediate supervisor a courtesy heads up of your plans prior to EOI (Assuming you have good relationship with your supervisor) ? Imagining the awkwardness were i was a supervisor and being notified of an EOI via a system message, without direct notice from that employee. How much in advance would you give them this heads up.

Typically you cannot receive unemployment benefits until your severance pay expires(I.e. if you get 1 year’s pay, you cannot receive unemployment until a year after your termination); however, different states may have different rules.

From what I have heard every EOI will be accepted. The fact that they upped the severance to 3 weeks instead of the usual 2 weeks is telling us that. You do get UB. If I were you, I'd take 6 months off , collect severance and UB , maybe even take vacation in Thailand or something and enjoy the holiday and ride out the recession as cheaply as possible, until Employers start hiring again, in mid 2021. Plan your future don't let Chevron dictate it for you.

It says you do not need to tell your supervisor. It doesn’t forbid it.

If you want it and your close to your supervisor tell them. They might help you accomplish that goal.

However, if you know they will want you to stay no matter what, I would keep it from them. They might derail your plans.

So read the company guidance it specifically states do not tell your supervisor and there are reasons for that. If HR handles it all the statement to unemployment is you were laid off due to lack of work. Telling and discussing with your supervisor makes you vulnerable to unemployment denial.

@ 2dsp - they didn’t make it any more attractive with the enhanced EOI for folks with more than 17 years. Makes you wonder if they are targeting a different group of folks or if.near-end of career folks are a given... to]I even will tell.

This round you do not apply for jobs plus EOI, but rather are asked to apply for jobs or EOI. Given this, very few EOI can be turned down (they would have to select a job for you and this would block your opportunity to be considered for other positions). Previously with EOI lay-off you were terminated for lack of work, and could apply for unemployment. Does this new “either or” process mean with an EOI you are quitting rather than being laid off...I do not know. Interesting question.

I’m in the same boat. Under 10 years and have been thinking abut leaving the industry over the last year. The regular EOI had me on the fence, but now with the enhanced terms I consider a nice parting gift for those folks not close to retirement but thinking about leaving.

Are there concerns that with the enhanced EOI, CVX will lose a load of talent, folks slated to fill in the generational gap or what you might call it? It’s well known by now this industry is facing challenges attracting and retaining younger hires.

And, what are my odds of having my EOI approved? Will they let talented, mid career chaps like me leave? Who makes the decision to approve the EOI?

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve been with Chevron 10 years and I’ve been considering leaving them for the past year and I was on the verge of just quitting earlier this year when JJ sent the email out about the EOI. Now I am playing the waiting game in hopes of getting my parting gift.

I can tell you have asked HR this question already and the answer is yes, if you are given the EOI chevron will not contest your unemployment claim.

I kept my boss informed during my EOI process. I also enabled a smooth handover of responsibilities. No unfinished business.

If you have a good relationship with your boss and you trust them, you should let them know as courtesy, they can help you navigate the process. Telling them about a week ahead sounds reasonable.

OP, hope you aren't our insider in San Ramon who leaks out the news here before our management informs. Thank you for your service

Read the FAQ - Chevron will not contest if one applies for UI benefits. EOI is included.

OP, your question on whether submitting your EOI would bar you from applying for unemployment benefits is a good one. I’ve got to admit that you make a good point. It is synonymous to me that volunteering to leave and quitting your job could nullify you from receiving UI benefits. However, to be absolutely sure, k–l two birds with one stone. Talk to your boss in confidentiality and let him/her know you are exploring the possibility of doing the EOI, but predicated on getting your questions answered. Ask your boss to get an email reply from HR that he will forward to you. Ask whether submitting your EOI will disqualify you from receiving UI benefits or result in Chevron telling the State Unemployment Commission that you volunteered to leave. I think the company will cite the reason to them as “Lack of Work” and thereby allow you to successfully get your unemployment benefits. IMO, the company is only seeking EOI volunteers to reduce the number of employees they’ll need to forcefully layoff. Best to you in your final decision and outcome.
