It is a c-ap shoot no right way and no wrong way, just your way. Right now there is no clear career path to follow, in the future Pioneer 2.0. There may be some general guidelines to ponder:
(1.) If you are over 55 you will probably get a package if you ask.
(2) If your position may be easily be replaced by a contractor probably not a bad idea to ask
(3.) If you are under 50 and are going to work 15-20 more years and 2.0 does not lay out a career for you, ask for the package, move on and don't look back, and finally
(4.) the relationship with you boss or your new 2.0 boss, if not good and not likely to get better request a package. I don't see Pioneer being punitive on those that ask as you may be saving someone else job. The only downside after asking and it is not granted and you stay you will probably be graded as PERFORMING in all future annual reviews, and this will ripple through to your options, bonus and future raises. I personally know several people that want the package they are north of 50 and ready to pack their tools and go home. I guess the one great unknown to me, if this RIF is not enough, will there be any gold in the pot for future RIFees if they occur. THIS MAY BE THE TIME
