When I got laid off, it was the last time I allowed a job to interfere with life. No longer was I going to become a slave to a master. I lost so much important family time working all of those extra hours, weekend call outs, late night meetings, canceling vacations with the promise they will make it right. It never happened. Appraisals and reviews were always high. All that any company cares about is how much are they paying you, can they get 80% of the work while paying 60% of your salary to someone else, and what type of bad publicity do they get (which is extremely minimal in all cases).

Like you with Netflix, I am with a much better employer. About 3 months in a project was behind schedule a little. My manager came to me instead of me coming to his office. His first comment is that he was sorry for having to do this. He said he needed me to move to another project for a week to see where I can help close some gaps. It would require 10 hours of over time. Yes, 10 hours of over time was all and he apologized for before even asking me. Because of how the operate and to control any types of favoritism or unfair practices, all hours worked have to be counted. Either they pay you for the overtime (I am salaried) or they give comp time. I had an extra 1.25 days added to my vacation total for the year.

Damn right there is a good life after leaving Cisco. The old Cisco manager in my Asian office was playing politics to the hilt in order to climb the ladder and did f*** all for my career (not even an annual review). He knew nothing about sales even though he is in a sales position.

To everybody In this thread... there is life after Cisco. And more money too. Trust me. I was there 12 years, left on my own accord about 18 months ago for a cloud software job. It’s great. Our company hasn’t stopped hiring since I got here. Stock is going up. Pay is better than Cisco. We are growing like crazy.

Trust me, everything will be fine. Focus your mind on what the next best step is for YOU. Don’t let Cisco make that decision for you. Don’t waste your energy being miserable and stressing about bad managers, and worrying about how long you will last there.

As they pay you to essentially sit and do nothing, train up on some new technology. Start applying, get some new certs. Make some new contacts.

Culture differs from group to group within a company. Reporting manager is mainly responsible for the team culture within a team. VP and directors need to build a team with different skills and form a team and instill culture, mentor the employees and take right decisions after consulting the stake holders.
If this is not taking place in a company, employee union can address these issues when the top mafia are ruling and bullying everyone. But unions are being dismantled and not encouraged by the greedy top management in this country.

What an exceptional manager and a role model for delivery managers (or lack thereof) at companies like Cisco exploiting skilled workers due to unskilled leadership..

my story is that our manager/director for the last 2 years at Cisco constantly scares entire team for potential layoffs, to date, I still hold grudges on him, he is from southern India x years ago, got some MBA at one of the San Jose state back early years and somehow rise to the rank of management. Every meeting, he says he is ranking people, horrified every one of us.. many quit and some moved on.. just horrible person if you keep thinking about it. constantly compare us with cheaper person somewhere else, Krakow, Mexico, India, china, Russia..

very upset ...

Ya - Netflix and their fascination with 11 year old naked girls is not the best example to be using right now.
