Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Is Nike a Cult?

I survived, for now. But I am so anxious that I'll be let go. My skills are transferable and I should be able to find a decent job relatively easily. And yet, I am anxious and dread rejection. It almost feels that without Nike I'd use my identity, I've been here over 10 years and I've invested so much. I belong here, I care about Nike, I've given it everything? It feels like it'd be the end if I would not belong, if I was to be expelled?

Anyone else feels the same way?

Is this how it feels to be in a cult?

You will be. She’s a bad girlfriend that will never love you as much as you love her. But if you made it, you have at least 3-5 years before the Board decides on another “flavor of the moment” pivot and screws you all again. Personally, I’m relieved I don’t have to see what the next 2-3 years of chaos and BS looks like for you guys.

not a cult. more like stockholm or battered wife syndrome imho. you get a black eye or you see them mistreating your friends w/ layoffs etc and you get flowers the next day in the form of product discounts and thirst thursdays w/ the company saying that it still 3's you. at a certain point you have to see it for what it is (no more no less) and move on.

The company you work for is NOT your identity. Only you can define your identity.

" It almost feels that without Nike I'd use my identity, I've been here over 10 years and I've invested so much. I belong here, I care about Nike, I've given it everything?" Oh how I wish this was a mutual feeling...

Complacent and being comfortable is cancer to your career. The best time to look for a job is when you have one.

I think this happens in most companies that create employees passion. It is a good thing, as it is to let it go when needed.
Have you ever noticed how many people that quit Nike is calling back 2 years after? Many! And have you also noticed how many times Nike gives them opportunities? That shows good criteria in hiring managers. In my previous company the word would have been “don’t hire someone that didn’t value working here before”

Like any wildly successful company, the people who got in at the start benefit the most. Nike was also fortunate to have hit the mother lode with Jordan and Tiger. They literally did not plan that and weren't really even necessarily prepared to handle the immediate success and money flowing everywhere. A lot of things that were beyond the control of anyone happened to fall in favor of a bunch of regular guys from Oregon at a very lucky time in history. You will probably never see this again, just like Phil.

Seriously? You are guys are all glorifying Nike as though it has some power over you. It is just a f—ing job for f— sake. Do your job and get paid. THAT IS ALL. If Nike says goodbye to you just move onto the next pay check opportunity with a another company, then again after that until you f—ing retire.

Take notice all employees are replaceable as are all jobs. I fell in this trap gave up prime time in life for a job that left me in the dust, very damaging to sense of self. I suggest everyone get a side gig prep yourself for the brand to dump you, it could be the most unhealthy relationship if you do not protect yourself.

Like many on this board have said before, there is a beautiful world waiting for you outside the berm. I’m one of the many that were let go in 2017 after 7 loyal years. Although I grew to hate more about my job than I loved, it was still a big initial shock as well as a blow to my ego.

I was never able to get on board with the backstabbing and winning at all costs mentality. Nike might be the #1 footwear brand from a sales perspective but from a people perspective it’s not even close. Don’t believe the hype, there is a lot more cash and appreciation for your skills waiting for you out there. You just gotta go get it.

@OP+17EcD8tJ It just means you really love what you do and the people that surround you. I left on my own accord 7 years ago, yet still remember how much I loved the work that I did and the people that I met. Sports makes the world go around :)
