Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I'd say take the job, assuming that you are like us mortals needs a paycheck to survive. Continue your job search and look for a high pay and better position. Most importantly, leave T off your resume, trust me on this one. If you can find a better position within the new few months, don't ever mention that you worked for T, don't update LinkedIn or any social media. Good luck.

wouldn't go near att cloud with a ten foot pole. been mismanaged from the very beginning because it didn't fit rand and stephens financial creativity just like everything they touch.

but if you are looking to stay alive and where you are is getting eliminated then yeah go play musical jobs and see how long that gig lasts and maybe you can move to something else if that gets eliminated.

ATT cloud is a proprietary instance of the boat anchor OpenStack. ATT invested billions in this (ATT Itegrated Cloud). Like everything ATT touches, it is now dead. AIC is like a fly on a horses butt, when compared to other cloud providers. AIC can’t even meet the needs of ATT’s internal clients. ATT is in the process of ditching AIC and moving everything to Azure and AWS. Sysadmins are a dime a dozen. System administration is a skill, of many, that most every IT person should have. Public cloud now takes care of 90% of sysadmin needs. If you take the job, plan on being surplused in the next year.

SA is not a valued position in AT&T. You'll have a target on your back every time they want to outsource something and the acquiring company will want to replace you quickly (unless you are offshore and work for peanuts.)

there is no such thing as AT&T cloud - go somewhere else - this place is a sinking ship that only the execs will get to ride out or get promoted for their failures!!!

The only new hires that counts at T, are the TDP's. The Interns. They are paid very well, get coddled with cush projects. Get to pick and choose the good projects and won't touch real work if their career depended on it. Everyone else is just thrown in to grind it out and paid low.

At one time, AT&T was a great company to work for. That is no longer the case. It is now mediocre at best. Still not bad, just not great. A lot of the old-timers (myself included) b–ch and moan, because it is nothing like we had for years. Those days are long gone. Remember, if you have good skills in an in demand field, you will always be able to get a good job.

Only until after I started shopping my skills elsewhere did I realize that T pays in the bottom half to bottom 25% of the market. If you need these skills and nobody else will hire you, then by all means take the offer, but only plan to stay 18-24 months. However, if you can apply elsewhere, I would. You will find that these guys are only looking for cheap labor and it's not worth the quarterly headache of layoffs constantly hanging over you.

They lowballed me both times I got hired (Yeah, I know). I said "No thank you". They came back at the top of the scale both times. The people offering usually have no clue and they go to the manager for an OK for more.

A job is a job, and any cloud experience is worth it; the general cloud skills are hot & transferable for many years to come.

That said, AT&T's private cloud won't grow as fast as some big public clouds like Amazon and Microsoft, who are the leaders in this area.

If you want to worry every quarter about pending layoffs year after year after, then sure go for it until something better comes along. Been with T for over 3 decades and there hasn’t ever been a year where the threat of a layoff didn’t surface! It’s a constant and creates a very stressful environment, loss of sleep, up nights worrying if your job is at risk, etc., etc.!

Take the job, learn all you can, pick up a Cloud certificate (Azure, AWS, or Google), put together a nice resume, and get out in 2 years.
