Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Is Cisco still buying MPLS Companies and laying them off again ?

I have always wondered why John Chambers left Cisco.

What I wondered is:
If they did NOT want him (John Chambers) to buy MPLS companies anymore?

If not, why did he leave?

MPLS stands for the initials:

  • * Mario Mazzola, "the M"
  • * Prem Jain, "the P"
  • * Luca Cafiero, "the L"
  • * and Soni Jiandani. "the S"

These four people started a few startup companies that Cisco bought (repeatedly).

Does Cisco continue to buy companies founded by those four people?

Ironically, MPLS also stands for Multi Protocol Label Switching.
(So that must be an inside joke, at Cisco, I guess. - hahaha, I get it.)

With anything related to MPLS Jc had FOMO and he was ready to spend billions to keep that fear away.

I guess chuck Norris doesn’t give a c-ap.

No way JC was just in the right place at the right time. He deserves no credit for the stock bubble.

The MPLS gang was just a high level scam for spin outs and spin ins at Cisco, and for the MPLS family and friends to make a ton of easy money. What MPLS and Cisco did back then should have been illegal, but they figured out a loophole, and the internet bubble just amplified it. Alot of anger was generated within the company regarding the spin in/out companies, since it rewarded only a few people.

I have been working for Cisco for more than 25+ years. John Chambers bring Cisco to the top company in 2020 with market cap of $500B. He completely changed the Silicon Vally landscape last century. It is the first big company I heard of doing the followings: a) free drink & pop corn. b) everything including secretary gets some stock options and every year give you more stock options c) 20%+ annual bonus. d) stock splits almost every year in '90. e) allow working from home. f) reimburse your home DSL. Cisco in '90 like today Google, FB, AMZN. Cisco is recognized more as "marketing and selling machine" than a core high-tech company. It re-invent itself mainly via acquisition. Its first acquisition is "Cresendo" (the company founded by Mario in (MPLS)). After Year 2000, Cisco started losing its charm. The last decade is getting worse. I notice a major change in the distribution of engineers. In the past, sort of 30% American, 30% Chinese, 30% India. There is a period of time, the "CI" in Cisco stands for Chinese and India. This day, the company is mainly an Indian company. You won't see many white people in the engineering department. Cisco celebrate Dewalli than the Halloween. No wonder Cisco has to make round of round of layoff because it lacks the right leadership. John Chamber is not doing a good job after Year 2000, but Chuck doesn't seem to be better. Take a look of Cisco spin off Zoom, its market cap is close to Cisco. It has many engineers making millions of dollar there than those in Webex (working hard but make no money).

Only an old-timer would remember those big names from the past (like me). For the new employee inquiring about JC, John Chambers was the CEO at Cisco from 1995 to 2015. I don't agree w/ other statements here that he ruined Cisco. IMHO, he made Cisco what it became during those 20 years and employees loved him! He left to retire at the age of 65 but then started his own VC firm.

VoIP has been around a lot longer than the MPLS routing protocol.

MPLS uses QoS all the way through, but not everybody uses MPLS in their network, let alone from all their datacenters and from all the routers in between (All routers have to have dedicated circuits).

That's some pretty expensive QoS/VoIP.

We still have Avaya phones. They are way more cheaper.

MPLS invented switching which Cisco acquired in the 1990's which represents 50% of Cisco revenue today
If not, Cisco would be bankrupt today

MPLS didn’t come up with the best technology once. They knew how to con JC and got lucky.

I'm a new employee concerned about all the layofs in my team.
Can someone tell me who is JC and what did he do to ruin cisco?

No Chuck is an id–t and ruined any relationship with JC and MPLS. They hate each other and also have different goals. Chuck only cares about social justice and giving money to them, MPLS only cares about technology and creating new innovations.
