Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Expats status quo perpetuated?

So much was exchanged in this place about "true" meritocracy and the opportunity to develop local talent to align workforce placement with cost management discipline. Now, did it really happen? Or, were these expats moved to less visible positions to minimize scrutiny?

What do you see?

I had my time as an expat and enjoyed every minute. I never expected it to last forever and was fortunate to have the years I did. Just keep up the networking and maybe one day you will get the opportunity! Until then, stop complaining about what others get!

I am from one of this poor countries.... and if you think it is upsetting to see expats here in the US, with similar salaries to locals, just imagine how we feel at my country with expats making in a month 10x plus what we earn....

Chevron, while a staunchly American company in every way, does have some overseas holdings. Thus, there will always be some expat positions. Play your cards right and you may get one. There are hundreds if not thousands of them.

This is just disheartening. All of these months we heard the rhetoric of Chevron going through a SERIOUS cost management evaluation, only to see that still a bunch of jobs that locals could perfectly do were allocated to VERY EXPENSIVE expats that will DEVELOP their capabilities in the next 3-4 years!!! Really??

What about giving US a chance? We, the ones that are pulling our weight everyday and that have completed every single needed certification and training requirements to climb to the next step in our career ladders?

Disheartening to say the least...to the trash goes the discretionary performance that we are all seeking to see.

I know expats that were laid off, and I know expats that were returned to positions in their home country, and I know people that were in their home country that will be moving to the US as expats. Its a mixed bag based on position requirements, employee interest, and employee potential. In general I saw a movement to reduce expats but not completely eliminate them.
