Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Enough with the cryptic "can confirm" posts

According to the oracle otherwise known as this "anonymous" public website, last Thursday was supposed to be "the big one", remember?! A "bloodbath", will be on the evening news, etc. Then some people say they can "confirm" a new future date, or even go so far as to imply how many "waves" there'll be and when.

Obviously, things are happening in pockets (IBM is big, after all) and the psychics here tend to provide zero information about their BU, so these "warnings" add no value. IBM is undergoing MASSIVE changes, you WILL be "impacted" in some way or another, whether it's a layoff next month or an involuntary internal movement next year.

Here's some hopefully more constructive insight:
1) If you're visiting this site, you know what you need to do. Follow your gut.

2) Stop hoping that a struggling business (that clearly states and demonstrates that there will be SIGNIFICANT changes) is in a position to keep everyone who is "valuable", "billable", "top performer", "only 23 years old", "cloud expert", "got an award", "30 patents", etc. Doesn't matter how great you are, the company must shrink...and if we're being honest with ourselves, the portion of disillusioned/disgruntled and/or "just resting and vesting" crowd really do need to just get out of the way–for their own sake and for their co-workers, who constantly have to hear about how things are not good enough.

3) Stop assuming that the company WANTS to be in the market you're reporting into right now, or even wants to continue the contracts with the client that licenses your product or you're billing to. A lot of existing contracts aren't particularly fruitful, have outlived their value (eg. the larger deal it was tacked onto or the business partner arrangement isn't fruitful), or are basically like baggage from the past 10 years of crazy decline. Just because your portfolio grew xx% last year doesn't mean it's "strategically important". Just because a bunch of money has been invested in "modernizing" the UI or architecture doesn't mean that it's an investment in growth (hint: optimize market value for a divestiture).

4) Take care of yourself! Spend less energy on worrying about an inevitable layoff and more energy on researching the skills you need to stay competitive in your job market.

I was fortunate enough to find a decent job outside IBM and can tell you, the bleeding will continue.

Analytics, hybrid cloud, security are all going to fall. They have put all of their eggs in the Cloud Pak basket and customers know, this is all sh–.

Existing heritage software products have been neglected for years and you can bank on them being dropped when ELAs renew.

IBM k–led themselves by choking the customer with products and services not needed or delivered.

Arvind will play the role of Meg Whitman in a couple years.

@zpz+18YTjvXE Not sure if you're being playful or not... This is precisely what IBM is doing, it's been communicated for at least two years now. Admittedly, it's one of he few things that the upper manager has been very clear and transparent about both internally and externally. Expert Labs is not a growth area, tends to be high-margin, expensive, and directly competes with business partners, who offer more growth potential and have little or no incentive to sell licenses without their services.

"Mate" guy seems legit, being so helpful by commenting on every post. No information == waste of time. Sometimes I wonder if the "insiders" realize that planting misinformation (dates, numbers) among the ranks is a standard tactic for organizational changes, corporate strategy actions, (anything that can affect stock activity if 'leaked'), etc. Anyone who has been a FLM or very close friends with one knows that you only get slivers of information (that can change the very next day during some exec meeting that you aren't in on). So while maybe some of these "can confirm" commenters are genuinely trying to be helpful, they're missing the mark with the sweeping statements. 12 people in one group, among 330k+ employees, is not a "bloodbath".

Let's save the "it's a bloodbath" and "it's BS" "I told you so" posts until Feb 1 and we see where we stand. Until then we sit and wait mate.

No, I am not. It's telling that you take offense to someone calling out the vagueness of some of these comments and posts. I apologize that some people want to use this site to discuss RAs and not BS.

Depends what you call bloodbath... when US Expert Labs lays off 12 MQ/IIB/Datapower consultants and pretty nobody is left to service these products... I would call that a bloodbath.

I guess IBM going forward is planning to rely on Business Partners only!!

Someone should count how many times the word bloodbath has appeared on this board. It is a tad overused.

I want to echo this message. The "can confirm," "me too," and other vague responses are complete BS. We get it that there are sour people here wishing for IBM to fail, and just want to spread fear to those who are currently employed by IBM. I think we all get it by now that IBM s—s, and we're all going to be let go at some point. However let's be constructive with this site, and not spread rumors. If you get RA'd, then provide details. Otherwise we'll assume it's fake and you're just stalking this site waiting to say "can confirm" to make you feel better about yourself. While you're at it, go ahead and give this comment a down vote if you're one of those people.

Thank you,
An IBM employee who knows they'll get RA'd at some point
