COVID in Houston

COVID is going up quite seriously, especially among kids. Vaccinated folks are still carriers. Harris County raised threat levels to “Severe”. Hospitals are stretched. People are masking up on campus (some, but they standout and get stares).

And what are we doing? Full return to campus, masks are optional, signage removed for social distancing. No social distancing required.

hey @9dyh+1ccrle4k you are a pompous fool.

you say "talk to a flesh and blood medical expert"?

Where have you been for the past 18 months. In a cave? Otherwise you would know the "experts" have been flip flopping all over the place. The "expert" advice they give one week turns out to be wrong the next week, and then gets changed over and over. So please tell us who the "experts" are who have been getting this thing right. I would love to hear them.

@9dyh+1ccrle4k I'm not sure why you are fascinated by na--d homosexuals. But you need to know that not everyone who wants to decide for himself is a "backwards conservative." I am a dyed blue progressive and I have a right to decide for myself!

… that kicked our b-ms because 50% of the adult population can’t get their heads out of their back ends. Wear a mask and get a vaccine.

How self-centered and childish! I suppose it is your body and your choice when it comes to drunk driving and public nudity. I bet your backwards conservative self would freak out if a ho-------l was walking around your neighborhood na--d. But you refuse to use tried and true health measure like masks. You need to turn off Fox and YouTube and talk to a flesh and blood medical expert.

Serves you right for choosing to live in Texas. You know what they believe. If you don't like it, move to a state or country with more community-minded, less individualistic values. Your other options: fight for representation, or shut TF up. We are tired of carrying the backwards states on our backs.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston area officials say the latest wave of COVID-19 cases is pushing the local health care system to nearly “a breaking point,” resulting in some patients having to be transferred out of the city to get medical care, including one who had to be taken to North Dakota.

Dr. David Persse, who is health authority for the Houston Health Department and EMS medical director, said some ambulances were waiting hours to offload patients at Houston area hospitals because no beds were available. Persse said he feared this would lead to prolonged respond times to 911 medical calls.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is at “critical capacity” due to the latest wave of COVID-19, according to an internal email the hospital confirmed was sent to staff Friday.

The hospital in Shenandoah is currently treating 90 patients in its 20-bed emergency department, the email said, and another 50 are waiting for intensive care unit beds to open up.

The situation is sad but not surprising for Dr. Christina Propst, who is one of the most outspoken pediatricians in Houston. Ever since the pandemic began, Propst has encouraged masking, social distancing, and being cautious to anyone who would listen.

"The emergency rooms at the major children's hospitals here in Houston, the largest medical center in the world, are extremely crowded," said Propst. "They are filling, if not full, as are the hospitals and intensive care units."

Propst and other medical providers say there are a number of reasons for the crunch in pediatric beds. First and foremost, it's clear that the delta variant of COVID-19 is affecting more children, and is more contagious.

Meanwhile, mRNA pioneer Dr. Robert malone points out that if 95% of severe patients in Israel were indeed vaccinated, and 85-90% of hospitalizations are among the truly vaccinated, it could suggest Antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) is occurring, in which antibodies generated during an immune response can bind to a pathogen, but are unable to prevent infection - instead acting as a Trojan Horse.

An 11-month-old baby with COVID-19 in Houston was transported 150 miles away due to lack of available hospital beds, ABC 13 reported Friday.

The baby girl, infected with the delta variant, had to be airlifted to Temple, Texas, after no pediatric hospitals in Houston said they could accept a transfer patient.

I’m Israel… “It’s true that most new cases are coming from the vaccinated community, but that’s in large part because of how relatively big that community is in Israel. The latest numbers show that 85 percent of Israeli adults are vaccinated, meaning there are more than five times as many of them as unvaccinated people.”

This week Dr. Kobi Haviv, the medical director of Israel’s leading center for respiratory care, joined the country’s Channel 13 News to share an extremely concerning update regarding breakthrough cases among the vaccinated.

According to Dr. Haviv, the vaccinated account for 85-90% of all new hospitalizations and 95% of “severe” cases at the Herzog Medical Center in Jerusalem.

He explains how one infected patient will spread the virus to “a large number of people” and that it doesn’t just happen “here or there,” it’s happening frequently.

We have over 150 million data points in the US showing that the vaccine is one of the safest ever developed in terms of short term side effects. In terms of the longer-term effects, there has never been a vaccine with serious long term effects that were not identified after 2-4 months of testing and widespread use. We cannot can predict the future with 100% accuracy but given the available data it seems that the real danger of COVID dwarfs any unlikely long-term effects of the vaccine.

The COVID vaccines are working as expected by significantly reducing the chance of severe symptoms, hospitalization and death. Public domain data clearly shows that the majority of deaths are associated with the unvaccinated. However, no vaccine is 100% and there will be breakthrough infections and potential for the vaccinated to have viral loads that could cause community spread. Where a mask.

I don't understand why there is such a big push to get everyone vaccinated? The vaccine clearly is not working. At this point more people are dying each week from the vaccine that are dying from covid. That's a fact.

That’s right! They need to grow up and realize EM doesn’t care about the well-being of their workers! Go back to the office and do everything you could’ve accomplished at home…only slower! Whatever will we do without Papa Woods?!

Just a reminder that big banks (arguably even more conservative and old fashion than us) haven’t had their employees return back. Meanwhile we’ve had 2-3 return to office programs. He-l CHEVRON still has people working from home. We truly are on a different level of “special”.

Watch this space - Schools are opening up. Kids lost immunity staying at home. Delta is a super variant in terms of ability to spread. Watch kids under 12 get COVID at alarming rate and bring it to folks at home. Some/many kids will get hospitalized. Vaccine efficiency is lower for folks who got vaccines in Mar-April. Hospitals get filled. This is unprecedented.

In addition there is another contagious respiratory virus going around in Houston. Watch out.

My best model says end of August in Houston would be same as May last year or Jan

Supervisors - just do what’s right. Give plenty of flexibility to your staff, they will need it. When the kid comes home sick from COVID - you and family will need to be quarantined. It’s 7 days if you are vaccinated, but please stay 14 days to be sure.

Worse is yet to come - when kids die maybe the world will wake up to the seriousness of this pandemic

The 180 on safety has been interesting to watch. No credibility whatsoever going forward on safety. Campus has been pretty much silent on the current rise in cases. Don’t see them going back to any type of WFH arrangements, especially since most are vaccinated. I’m vaccinated and continue to wear a mask and I suspect that it’s the vaccinated people who are masking up. Once school starts and kids cases begin to rise…thanks to Greg…parents will have to stay home with them. We are on our own. Do what’s best for you and your family.

Numbers seem to show about 30% of EMHC employees unvaccinated.

Question: Are three out of ten people on campus wearing a mask? Of those are are wearing a mask, how many of them are vaccinated? (I’m guessing most.)

You can also leave, and most hardworking EM employees would welcome getting rid of a corporate boot l!cker. You may think you’ve got some special rights and you are entitled to lecture ordinary people, but there’s an end of the rope even for the most stubborn parasites.

@qvp+1ccrle4k Although I like what Mayor Turner did, Abbott is such a hothead, that he will find a way to undo it. EM cherrypicks which guidance to go by, and they have only gone by the governor's guidance. Probably because the governor gives EM what they want since they have given him lots of political contributions. The company completely ignored any guidance at the city/county level during covid that did not align with the governors.

You can monitor the rapid increase in Covid 19 by the use of the Texas Covid 19 dashboard. It is updated daily. The "real time" Covid 19 cases are rapidly increasing each day. The Mayor of Houston is now mandating masks for all offices in Harris County.

The hospital ICU's in Houston are at 100% of capacity as of 1700 hrs today.

It is really sad that the mask wearers get scowling looks from their co-workers. As long as the governor says that masks and/or stay at home are not mandated, it will remain like this. My co-worker tells me her manager makes fun of anybody who believes in masks. Her group has to listen to that and not say anything against for fear that they will be the next to lose their job. This company has gone from being very risk averse regarding safety and wellness (to the degree it was absurd sometimes) to now where management that preaches anti-science are bulletproof
