COBRA questions

For those that have already quit (or those that may know about health insurance): I currently have the POS II B plan. In retrospect, I should have picked the cheaper POS II A plan, as I plan to quit this month to focus building my start-up.

When HR sends COBRA information, does quitting count as a "life changing event" and I can I elect for the cheaper plan? Or am I stuck with POS II B for as long as I use COBRA?

Also, for those who left... were you able to find cheap but quality healthcare on the "open market"? Do you recommend continuing coverage via COBRA or finding a new plan?

One note about using COBRA: Even if you pre-pay, it will take a week or two for the switch to be processed. During that time, your insurer will act as though you are no longer covered. From a continuity of insurance perspective, you will eventually show up as being continually insured, and any extra payments you make during this time should be reimbursed, but the easiest thing to do is to try to avoid anything incurring medical costs for the first couple of weeks after the shift (yeah, I know, easier said than done). We were unpleasantly surprised by this, so wanted to let others know. Apparently it’s just part of the process…

@1dav you my friend made an excellent point: "Just use emergency room for everything."

It seems that every time my family ends up in the emergency room, some illegal with a minor cold feigning death gets seen before those of us with the great healthcare plan.

Next year I am going to take my chances and switch to the gubment plan endorsed by President Brandon.

Of course, the healthcare.gov situation depends on the state (sometimes the county) where you live.
In Texas, my understanding it might be worth going with no healthplan.
Just use emergency room for everything.

Yes, when you receive your Wageworks COBRA packet, you will be presented with an election to also select POS II A plan. In my case, I used COBRA since I liked it as compared to those in the marketplace. I saw really cheap ones at the marketplace but I doubted their services. If I bought them directly from either Aetna or Cigna, they are far more expensive, so COBRA it was. Good luck.

Cobra cost would be full premium + 2% in administrative fees.

Cobra is going to charge you your price + Exxon's price + markup, so almost guaranteed to be unreasonably expensive. healthcare.gov is probably your best bet. Options there are not great, not terrible in my opinion
