Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Continued erosion of good jobs

You never see massive layoffs at T anymore, they’re much more discreet than that. Shifting / closing of office locations, technical support rebadge, mobility engineering outsourcing, COR store closings , agents, SPs etc. Every group has reduction quarterly “budget “ targets…translation, reductions. Employees are the most expensive resource, therefore always a target relief valve. The business as we know it is not sustainable for the amount of employees currently. Business services are a drain on revenue with awful margins ( especially on wireline) and even worse ignored breakage on sales, this division is simply a temporary stop gap to ever mounting competitive losses. Consumer wireless performs well, but better margins are had in AR, which inevitably will be the channel of choice once T can leverage mobility contracts with the union. Want to see well run businesses? Look at T’s largest competitors and associated share price and even more positive feedback from the financial markets, there is something terribly wrong here. As we’ve heard before, T will be an embarrassing business case study for future students. So…..no massive layoffs, but continued erosion of good jobs, professional growth and long term futures for good loyal people.

Bumped from @2hcb+1fVLmm4X, well said.

Don’t worry all you technicians, the work is coming very soon, blah, blah, blah!. ABFS techs will soon be doing the LNS trouble tickets work just to keep busy. All this cross-training because T over promised and under delivered by increasing their sales staffs. Most of our techs are idle, only 10-12 hours actual work per week while driving around burning up $5/gal gas doing nothing. Out for breakfast, out for lunch, then home, piece of cake! I seriously believe it will be slow for months on end due to numerous domestic and world events. There is too much chaos in America with no relief in site not to mention the war in Ukraine! T needs to re-evaluate its position maintaining all these employees sitting idle. What to do, what to do!

Yup.
8 AM.
No work.
But we need to be out of the garage by 8:10, so we drive to a hut or box by a gas station and get some coffee.
Boss says "Drive around the block, hit 25 mph (so the GPS shows we left) and look busy.
Now there is no where to go, nothing to do. But they insist we go out and drive around wasting gas and risking an accident.
They hide us on Air Pressure or PMs. Even those who know nothing about either.
OK. Id--tic.
I ain't going anywhere with 38 years of seniority.
Maybe by 10 or 11 a job will come in.
Otherwise, move the truck every 20 minutes, read, do crossword puzzles, nap, play games on the cell phone.
The bosses say nothing because if they get rid of techs they also get rid of bosses.
They worry about idling, trips to the garage, out of route and early returns.
A normal company would keep all the techs in until there is work rather than have them waste gas and just drive around.
Never mind you are paying 35ish techs $42 an hour to do nothing.
Keep telling us how broke you are.
Blame us peons.
Then go find a mirror.

T has high paid techs driving around in an attempt to appear busy.
There is little work.
But hey, if they want to keep me and the other $100K a year techs for doing maybe 4 hrs of actual work a week I'm all for it.
Not to mention the 7 or 8 levels of management.
And for every person working, there are 5 or 6 others making sure they are.
No way to run a business.

T is an avalanche of stupidity starting at the top. We have made many blunders with bad investments, and giving money away to T mobile. And because of these many awesome blunders, we have not invested in anything of real value like we should have. So our customer base not only leaves because of faster speeds by our competitors, but also because we purposely anger them. If a customer is fine with a 15.00 a month service, T decides either we do t want to offer it anymore and discos the service or jacks the price of the line to 150.00 a month. Well that one circuit may not have made a ton of money but that customer probably has more services through AT&T. Well we pi---d the customer off for one line maybe a dry pair used for an alarm or something. But we may have lost another 10 or more services they were buying from us. Then there is customer service. Good luck getting through 15min of prompts and another 45 min to get to a human if your lucky. Only to not being able to understand them, and no matter what your problem is, line down, slow speeds, etc. Bob your customer rep whom you can barely understand and can’t really test and troubleshoot will say your line is fine, you need a wifi extender and get you off the phone. The only way smart people would run a company this way would be to sabatage it. I have not met anyone that things we have the best and brightest running this company.
