IBM CEO explains why he offloaded Watson Health: Not enough domain expertise

https://www.theregister.com/2022/06/08/ibm_ceo_arvind_krishna_explains/

AK: "you're going to need doctors and nurse practitioners to speak to the buyers of Watson Health. That's not the IBM go-to-market field force, so there's a misalignment. Ditto in Promontory, you're going to need ex-regulators and accountants to go talk to people worrying about financial compliance. So, that's a little bit different than us."

Watson Health is a massive cluster ---. what a collossal failure. They are so WOKE they actually dont do anything except present charts to one another. I give it a year before its torn apart and sold by the PE firm.

There is always an excuse for IBM management to cover their mistakes. Now, it is OK to admit mistakes and change course at some point, but at IBM, mistakes are rampant... actually, there are only mistakes at IBM, one after the other.

I'd think HR should be next. "Turns out you need humans to do HR. So, that's a little bit different than us."

Weather next? "Turns out you need meteorologists to forecast the weather. So that's a little bit different than us." That acquisition never made sense to me.

IBM screws up everything it is getting into these days... Management doesn't care, they are only there to milk whatever they can milk to enrich themselves.

Or they could have maybe invested in having people who have been part of implementing health technology systems be part of the strategy. Instead the put in sycophants who were “experts” because they had undergone a health episode in their lifetimes.

I am a retired IBM executive. Left the company more than 20 years ago. Sorry to see it in such a sad state. The real problem, as I see it, is lack of a tangible product other than Red Hat which was acquired. AK needs to bet the farm on something new and innovative. I'm sure it exists somewhere in the company, the trick is for AK to find it and knock down the executives who are currently milking any remaining cash cows. As the saying goes, "Sacred cows make the best burgers!".

So I guess the logical question is why did AK see this and decide to punt, yet the IBM board let Ginni spent 5 billion minimum to be proven wrong. Heck of a job IBM board Heck of a job. Are you folks even awake during the board meetings

He is absolutely right about WH. It takes a specialized sales force. These types are not typical sales people either. Domain experts.

How much you wanna bet that within 2 years from now The Register will be reporting on AK saying the same thing about "IBM all in on "Hybrid" Cloud" business strategy when IBM sells off IBM Consulting.

AK: "you're going to need expert Cloud practitioners to speak to the buyers of AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud services. That's not the IBM go-to-market field force, so there's a misalignment....So, that's a little bit different than us."

Gee, ya don't say.

Could they maybe have simply asked somebody about this BEFORE they wasted $6B, or $7B, or $9B, or whatever the final tally was? And BEFORE they impacted THOUSANDS of people's careers?
