You don’t lose your pension when you leave…. You just don’t keep increasing the percent 1.6% a year. Which is worthless unless you keep getting salary bumps as well due to inflation rising

This is a good post. I’ve been thinking about looking a lot. Pension keeps me here. If I make $50k more for 20 years, it’s still less than the pension I’d get.

You don’t start getting super high comp until later. And raises were essentially frozen or low for a few years.

I promise those are real. I agree a 20 year CL 32 isn’t going to get a 80% raise somewhere else in average

Many leaving for higher pay. I have friend who have doubled their salary and others only 10% increase. These are engineers who were not ranked well. If you aren’t ranked well you should definitely leave.

2 years EMIT w/ non MBA masters degree, left for 90% increase to FAANG

7 years EMIT w/ sponsor, left for 110% increase again to FAANG

6 years EMIT, left for 25% increase to consulting (w/ MBA being paid for by company while working)

3 years EMIT top performer, left for 80% increase to FAANG

4 years EMIT, left for late stage startup that was supposedly valued at 50% (funny money is hard to price, especially with the recent tech stock slide). Not really sure what it is now, maybe breaking even?

Starting salary at a FAANG is around $160k straight out of college, EMIT is 80s. 2-3 yoe in FAANG can be over 200k easily, while at XOM you may be lucky to hit 100k these days now that you don’t get the auto CL bump. All of these were in 2022 and only one relocated to my knowledge (their decision, not company forced) and one occasionally travels to Austin for work.

I don’t believe any those stories about high performers quitting and getting 30, 40, or 50% raises. EM pays high performers too well, for them to leave.

I left to work for a start-up. Took about a 16% pay cut, but much better conditions, a nicer boss, manager who work for the company’s prosperity (not just to further their own careers), no office politics, colleagues who actually BELIEVE in the company’s vision, and mostly remote working.
