Don't kid yourself - Top performers aren't immune to layoffs. In fact, they are oftentimes targeted because they tend to be the highest earners on a team. The bank is notorious for getting rid of top earners and replacing them with younger workers at reduced pay. Managers are also intimidated by top performers. (Competence is always a hazard to an incompetent manager.) Here's a hint to stay off the radar: Run in the middle of the pack, and don't make waves. It also helps to have a godfather.
