Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Overheard in Spring

Out shopping and overheard a teenager telling her friends her dad used to work there and it was “hella toxic”.

My physician son warning me years ago to be careful because most of his patients who work at EM are suffering from stress related illnesses.

A friend told me she is retiring next month because she is on the verge of having a nervous breakdown because of her boss and the increased workload.

After telling my neighbor I’m thinking about quitting, she tells me she isn’t surprised. Her daughter works in a clinic that treats patients with anxiety & depression and it’s full of EM people. Through their patients, the staff know all about the company and its culture. It’s sad, but it’s a running joke that EM is their bread & butter. Her daughter is finding it hard to work there and not be permitted to tell patients to run like he-l from EM.

It’s tough hearing that EM and its toxic culture is common knowledge and full of employees who are suffering from anxiety and depression. I get it. This place has always been competitive, but in the last few years, it’s become dysfunctional and toxic. I’m quitting at the end of the year because I’ve unhappy at work for some time. I’m fortunate I can afford to leave when I choose and before I developed medical issues from this place. I hope those that are left can steer this boat back on course. It’s a shame to see such a large and profitable company fall in disgrace all because of incompetent leaders.

This post is so spot on. I finally retired after a 36+ year career. I was always pretty pro-EM, went the extra mile and always ranked top 1/3. I also had a TON of health problems that I had no idea were stress related. Headaches that would last for days, aches in my abdomen that could be debilitating, insomnia, inability to focus, or focusing to the point where any distraction just made me unreasonably angry. 36+ years. I NEVER connected these health issues to my problems with a work-life balance. Since I retired, all those symptoms, EVERY ONE, has disappeared. I can't describe how my daily mood had changed. I didn't even realize how good life could be outside that environment. There's life beyond EM, folks, and I encourage all of you to pursue it.

Darwood and company should be held accountable if not legally morally and ethicall.

They’ll face their fate someday.

I keep seeing a shockingly high number of recent retirees die quickly after retiring. Quit before you permanently damage your health. High blood pressure ki--s. Get a job with less stress’s and time to eat healthy and exercise. The pension is worthless if you die too quick to enjoy retirement.

It's been this way at the O&A Chemical plant in Beaumont for such a long time. Work and family life balance is nonexistence, and the work environment has always been very toxic.
New management changes every few years, so your health and wellbeing are of no concern. Lack of communication and the GOOD OLE BOY sponsorship program keeps this place turmoil.
