Calm down. Nobody will be kicked to the curb or instantly walked out of the building… unless you did something really bad (steal company property, harass coworkers, and the like),
In my layoff from Intel years ago, I already knew it was coming as the entire group was about to be eliminated, save those left to “turn off lights”. My direct manager seemed clueless that everyone already heard from the grapevine. My manager set up a 1:1 about 5 days beforehand. During the 1:1, I received the paperwork about severance package.
I was not walked out or asked to leave on the same day. I had 8 weeks to look for an internal job. I was planning to retire already and didn’t look for any job, internal or external.
So, i informed close coworkers and managers of my retirement decision but I did so a week later — during that one week, I collected my personal belongings from work and deleted any personal stuff from my work computer.
I remained 8 weeks just like everyone else In the 8 weeks, I “worked” from home, except to come in once a week to hear any latest news. I signed NDA and answered any emails and questions about pass-down but that didn’t take full 8 weeks.
Finally the last date came, I left my badge and laptop with the manager assigned to collect such items. I ran into BK on the way out and politely exchanged “hi”.
That was the most uneventful 8 weeks in my Intel career.
